International . HID Global's naviGO™ software received an "A" rating, the highest given by Veracode for application security.
The software, a key component of HID on the Desktop, earned this recognition because it passed tests that measure compliance with industry benchmarks such as the Common Vulnerability Enumeration Standard, the Vulnerability Scoring System, and the requirements of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which determine system weaknesses and vulnerability severity levels.
Within the HID on the Desktop platform, which controls physical access through cards, readers, and software, naviGO™ manages the user authentication lifecycle through credentials, including contact smart cards (with digital certificates), high- and low-frequency contactless smart cards, and knowledge-based authentication.
Colombia. With the Cívica smart card, which is used to enter the Medellín metro, users can now pay for public transport fares in two neighborhoods of the city.
Each of the buses of the companies that joined the use of this payment and identification system, has a reader that admits the entry of the passenger according to the load he has on his card. In the Campo Valdés neighborhood there are approximately 16 thousand users of public transport who joined this payment method.
In San Javier, another sector of Medellín, there are already seven buses of the integrated transport system of the metro that have the readers of the smart cards.
The administration of the Medellín Metro reported that another 110 integrated routes that exist in the Metropolitan Area are advancing the implementation of the readers.
Latin America. The increase in crime in the region has caused the security sector to increase its sales, according to a report of the security market in Latin America by the Security Industry Association (SIA, for its acronym in English).
The report analyzes the physical and electronic security situation in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Panama and Venezuela.
Physical security reached in one year a market of US $ 84 million in Argentina, US $ 70 million in Colombia, US $ 57 million in Venezuela, in Chile it is US $ 45 million and in Panama of US $ 18 million.
In the six countries, the segment that attracted the most movement was that of video surveillance systems, with a market size of US $ 263 million and the second place is occupied by intrusion alarms with US $ 124 million.
International . The United States, France, Russia, Israel and China migrated physical warfare to virtuality and have cyberweapons, as mentioned in McAfee's fifth annual report on virtual criminology.
In the report, McAfee President and CEO Dave DeWalt mentions that several countries are actively involved in this virtual arms race, preparing sophisticated attack techniques. "Today weapons are not nuclear, but virtual, and everyone must adapt to these threats," he says.
The attacks of the countries involved in this new form of warfare seem to be motivated by political objectives, rather than by an economic benefit.
The specialists of the security company assure that governments must be prepared for this situation, they also propose that it is vital to generate an open debate between the government and the private sector, since future cyberattacks targeting essential infrastructure could be devastating.
"Over the next 20 to 30 years, cyberattacks will increasingly be a component of warfare," said William Crowell, former deputy director of the U.S. National Security Agency, cited in the virtual criminology report. "What I can foresee is whether networks will be so dominant and unprotected that cyber warfare operations will be unparalleled."
According to the report, the attacks target government networks and this type of attack can turn into real devastation. Likewise, these offensives are also aimed at electricity transmission networks, telecommunications, transport, finance and water supply.
