Personalized IDs for Guatemala
Identification cards are issued by the National Registry of Persons (RENAP) to more than 11 million residents in order to improve the citizen authorization process and reduce fraud related to benefits.
When a citizen registers in Guatemala's civil database, both fingerprints are taken and a face sheet is made using facial recognition software. The biometric data and biographical information of the citizen are stored in the database of the civil registry and on a smart chip integrated into the identification card. For this process, RENAP uses the automated fingerprint identification system and facial recognition.
