Colombia. The National Government will invest 8,000 million pesos (about US$3.3 million) in the installation of 300 security cameras in Santa Marta.
The announcement was made by interior Minister Juan Fernando Cristo, during a meeting with the authorities and businessmen of the capital of Magdalena. The cameras will be installed strategically throughout Santa Marta to have full coverage and thus combat the crimes that have been registered in this area of the country.
With this technology, the Metropolitan Police will be able to be effective and forceful in the fight against crime. The goal is to have full coverage with the most modern and state-of-the-art system for Santa Marta, which comprises a monitoring room with its emergency system operating 24 hours a day.
"With this commitment we are going to make a huge qualitative leap in terms of citizen security for this capital. The police have been making an important effort and the conclusion today is that the perception of the Samaritans has improved," said the minister, Juan Fernando Cristo.
It is important to remember that this commitment had been made by President Juan Manuel Santos several months ago during a community security council in the Pescaíto neighborhood of this capital. By the end of 2015 it is expected that Santa Marta will already have installed the cameras that the Government proposed.
