International. Axis' ARTPEC-8 SoC (System on Chip) is primarily designed to offer new opportunities linked to advanced analytics applications based on deep learning at the edge.
In addition, the new SoC reinforces the functions and features introduced with the ARTPEC-7, such as superior image quality, enhanced safety and a powerful compression system. In addition, as the ARTPEC-8 has been designed in-house by Axis, it provides an essential level of control to ensure maximum cybersecurity. From now on, the new chip will be the foundation on which most of Axis' network video products will be developed. Some of the first cameras to incorporate it will be axis Q3536-LVE/38-LVE dome cameras and AXIS Q1656-LE box-type camera, available very soon.
"With ARTPEC-8, Axis paves the way to a new era of advanced analytics based on deep learning at the edge," said Johan Paulsson, Chief Technology Officer. We want to offer the most practical access to high-value data through the largest analytics offering on the market. Our ultimate goal is to contribute to creating a safer and smarter world by expanding the range of applications and important use situations. In addition, the ARTPEC-8 is 100% optimized for high-quality network video solutions. And, as always, we have full control over everything, down to the last of the transistors."
Deep learning-based analytics at the edge
The ARTPEC-8 enables powerful deep learning-based analytics applications at the edge, where cameras have the processing power to analyze data locally. An example of deep learning-based analytics is a highly accurate, real-time object detection and classification solution that enables the development of analytics systems capable of differentiating between different objects, such as vehicle types. This model is the foundation of AXIS Object Analytics. It also opens the door to other deep learning-based analytics solutions for high-value data for operational and security decision-making. Thanks to Axis' open platform, these other analytics applications will include custom-designed applications by Axis partners.
Advantages of data analysis at the edge
Analytics based on deep learning at the extreme, hand in hand with ARTPEC-8, can bring many other not insignificant advantages. With data analysis at the end (in the camera) no information is lost during compression and transmission, so you get more reliable results. It also accelerates alert activation, allowing users to respond instantly to protect people and facilities and make the best decisions at all times. It also translates into economic savings, as it uses less bandwidth, storage and servers. And with less bandwidth and storage, the risk of loss of sensitive data is also greatly reduced, while the decrease in the number of servers provides greater scalability.
Superior analytical capability and maximum image quality
The ARTPEC-8 also allows the use of Axis Lightfinder 2.0 and Axis Forensic WDR, for optimal image processing in complex lighting conditions. These two solutions form the backbone of Axis Scene Intelligence technology, designed to optimize the performance of analytics applications. The result is analytics with reliable results and fast and accurate forensic search technologies, with virtually no false alarms even under complex surveillance conditions. Scene Intelligence brings decades of experience in market-leading image processing solutions to customers.
Advantages in the field of cybersecurity
ARTPEC-8 consolidates the cybersecurity features already introduced with ARTPEC-7, such as signed firmware and secure boot. The ARTPEC-8 supports Edge Vault technology, for the secure storage of certificates and cryptographic keys. Some cameras will also incorporate the Trusted Platform Module (TPM), for FIPS-level secure storage.
