International. The number of security cameras in London is scheduled to reach 627,000 in 2019, and could surpass 1 million cameras by 2025, according to new research.
Research by CCTV.co.uk shows that the number of CCTV cameras in London will reach an all-time high this year.
This unprecedented number is the equivalent of one camera for every 14 people, and takes into account ccTV installed on both commercial properties and private homes.
Such a large increase in the number of CCTV cameras in recent years means that anyone doing business in the capital will be caught on camera around 300 times a day.
But what is driving this rapid growth in surveillance?
Jonathan Ratcliffe, CCTV.co.uk, equates it to a combination of heightened fear among family members, the standardization of commercial security in new buildings, and smaller, more affordable security cameras, such as home CCTV systems and door cameras.
Jonathan said: "The number of cameras being installed in the capital is growing at a much faster rate than ever before because private households are installing smaller and cheaper systems.
"People are really scared and share CCTV footage on social media when the police don't act fast enough as is the usual practice these days.
"Cheap doorbell cameras and DIY systems have seen the number of cameras increase, and new commercial buildings have CCTV installed as standard."
And this growth will not stop anytime soon. By 2025, CCTV.co.uk anticipates that there will be one million cameras in this city, reflecting a growing trend that is also reflected across the country.
"We estimate one camera for every 14 Londoners, but this could increase to one in 11 as technology improves and the population increases, which means a staggering number of 1m cameras by 2025."
