In this edition, we announce the winners of the ALAS Award for Security in Latin America and the Caribbean. Beyond who obtained the highest qualification from the jury, it is worth highlighting the interest and enthusiasm generated by this unique recognition in the region and that for the first time brought together the most innovative security projects, with the greatest social impact and compliance with regulations.
In total 8 projects managed to reach the qualification phase by the jury. Some more registered but did not comply with the necessary documentation to be taken into account in the first phase of the contest.
Finally 1 project from Mexico and 2 projects from Colombia obtained the highest rating and took the first three places of the contest.
Particularly Colombia and Mexico are examples of good practices and at the same time of cooperation and learning in the security sector, especially in what has to do with citizen security and the fight against criminal organizations.
Sharing the problem of organized crime has led the governments of these countries to make cooperation agreements and share good practices.
Are security companies working along the same lines? What benchmark of good practices and lessons learned is made between the two markets? What valuable information do these two countries share, different from what governments share?
The WINGS Award puts us in the challenge for security companies to successfully combine technology, creativity, leadership and social impact. And the good use of information is the first step to achieving this.
Therefore, we will promote the space from ALAS News during the next three editions to analyze the common aspects that these winning projects had and the points of agreement that can represent a compendium of good practices for the region.

Video surveillance at major events
By Héctor Xatruch
WINGS Instructor
Supervisor of the marketing department for the video surveillance line of Panasonic Latin America
The big manufacturers in the sector are always looking for new and interesting projects to highlight their benefits with respect to competitors.
On this occasion, I am writing to you to share information that has been published by these manufacturers or their integrators, which allow us to acquire knowledge about the proper management of projects, to be successful.
In these almost ten years in the electronic security market, I have had the opportunity to be on the side of the manufacturer, on the side of the integrator, as a consultant and instructor. It has been satisfying to see how the different projects in which I was involved from the design have been brought to a successful conclusion, despite the setbacks. until its implementation and start-up.
I would like to share two sporting events in which their organisers have demanded the installation of surveillance cameras, in order to ensure the safety of all the people who congregate to enjoy this type of activity.
- Baseball World Cup Panama 2011.
- World Cup Brazil 2014.
The common denominator of both events was the use of state-of-the-art technology, which would allow to cover the demand demanded by the authorities, to safeguard the assets and honors of all those involved in these world-renowned sporting events.
Without going into the details of the brands presented, I would like to delve into the elements that led to the successful completion of the goal set.
- Planning.
- Logistics.
- Project management.
- Teamwork.
- Communication.
Every project requires planning; and if we incorporate the qualifying adjective "strategic" to this word, we will have an important element that will allow us to manage in an appropriate way, each of the phases of the work.
Today there are several tools for project planning, in which we can measure the times, manage the tasks, assign responsible and make the adjustments, as we reach the date of the event.
Logistics is another of the pillars that sustain the success of the projects. Logistics is understood as the coordination between the integrator and manufacturer for the dispatch of equipment in the established time, availability of alternative equipment to video surveillance such as wiring, electrical outlets and communications equipment, among others.
Each of the projects we develop in electronic security, must be managed through a project management system to manage it in the best way. This type of tools allows us to assign responsible for each of the tasks that are necessary to execute; the estimated time we must devote to each activity and the scope of the project, among others.
Teamwork includes everyone involved in the commercial chain, from the manufacturer to the installer. It should be noted that for large events, we have a deadline to meet the delivery, which is vital to define well in advance to have enough time to allow us to do the relevant tests and deliver on the stipulated date.
It is equally important to have qualified technical staff to make the appropriate adjustments in the configuration and start-up of the project. It is ideal if these technical personnel already have a product certification from the manufacturer.
Solutions and products, such as those required by a sporting event, require factory support and support. The manufacturer must be willing to travel to the installation site to ensure the correct and satisfactory installation of the solution.
In short, to achieve the success of this type of project, the key is to achieve a strategic alliance between the different players that are involved.
