The Challenge of the Safety Manager: Prevention and Protection in the Modern World
By Fernando Moreno
Instructor ALAS
Teacher of the Nueva Granada Military School
A new model of security consulting at an integral level is necessary to mitigate risk in the family environment.
All the actors that are part of a community are responsible for the protection and prevention of the future of the world: children.
Parents, educators, caregivers, state, integral security company, are part of a modern society, immersed in various levels of threats, vulnerabilities and risks (natural, structural, personal and technological) that our families face.
These situations make us reflect on comprehensive care, skills in prevention, protection, awareness and training in surveillance in all scenarios in which a baby, minor and adolescent, elderly people, must establish to guarantee a safe environment.
Current statistics mention that every year more than 2.5 million children suffer injuries and even death. In Colombia, by legal medicine, around the deaths of babies and adolescents due to accidents in homes, traffic accidents, entertainment centers and child abuse are the reflection of the Colombian reality.
In this scenario, the different actors such as parents and educators must be prepared to avoid these situations and guarantee their integrality in all the spaces where a child is present.
It is sad to see in the news reports about children and young people dying in homes or shopping centers for different reasons. The figures confirm the reality: in Colombia there are approximately seven accidents a day in homes according to the Ministry of Health.
Children and young people are curious by nature and their desire to know everything that surrounds them often exposes them to a series of dangers, which are often created by the carelessness or lack of supervision of an adult.
Falls from height, burns, poisonings and jams that reach the emergency department are observed, even, in children of 6 months of age. In the same way, machucones, accidental intake of medicines or poorly stored cleaning products and traffic accidents begin to be a recurring reason in infants over 3 years old.
In Colombia, for example, falling from height was the most frequent home accident in children aged 0 to 10 years in 2008 (1,781 cases), according to the District Health Secretariat. It is followed by:
- Blunt object injuries (547).
- Burns (272)
- Short-point wounds (170)
- Poisoning (110)
According to the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, submersion is the leading cause of accidental death in minors in the country; the second is the falls from height.
Therefore, the statistics issued by legal medicine around the deaths of children and adolescents due to accidents in homes, traffic, in centers of amusement and child abuse are the reflection of the Colombian reality, where the different actors who share and live with them must be prepared to avoid these situations and guarantee their quality of life.
Therefore, we know that childhood and adolescence are particularly important moments of life where feeling safe and loved are minimum conditions to be happy within a more humane and equitable society.
For this reason, I present, to parents, security companies, caregivers, this reflection that seeks to develop comprehensive security consulting at the family level, awareness and skills in the assessment and mitigation at the Risk Management level in all the scenarios in which a residential complex is present.
The Integral Security in Family Environment Project invites us to build a more supportive city where children and adolescents and the elderly are recognized as a subject of law, with daily environments that contribute safely to their development.
To my daughter "Vale", I thank you, for being the raison d'être of this beautiful initiative in the prevention and protection of all children in Colombia and the World.
