In the Chacarita neighborhood of the city of Buenos Aires is the Urban Monitoring Center (CMU), which has the capacity to monitor the video surveillance cameras installed in all Buenos Aires neighborhoods. This Urban Monitoring Center monitors live the more than 7,300 surveillance cameras distributed on all streets and the 4,000 cameras installed in public passenger transport units.
The main objective of the Urban Monitoring Center is to prevent crime and intervene, giving notice of events to the competent authorities in the area. At the same time, the CMU functions as a support in police and judicial investigations. It also has a central videowall of 15 meters wide by 3 meters high composed of 48 screens of 55 inches each.
All operators monitor the images 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the cameras capture and it is recorded in a state-of-the-art control and storage room, the digital image archiving system is protected with double encryption.
The CMU has access to information from the cameras of the City of Buenos Aires, Urban Highways (AUSA), Buenos Aires Subways (SBASE), Transit and Digital Ring, so it makes it the most important technological tool available to the Integral Monitoring System of the City and is the largest in Latin America and prevents crimes and intervenes in a faster way.
