Seven reasons why a network card with cybersecurity is necessary

EatonLatin America. Eaton Power Quality shared some reasons to have a network card for monitoring and controlling an uninterruptible power system or UPS, securely connecting it directly to the grid.

As online dangers continue to rise, IT leaders are looking for assurances to ensure connected technology is secure and resilient, a concern that is addressed by the global security sciences organization UL, in its new standard for software cybersecurity for network-connected devices.

Here are the 7 reasons to implement it:
1. The consequences of cyberattacks are serious
From tarnished reputations to operational downtime to the loss of sensitive personal or business information, the potential consequences of a cybersecurity incident can be catastrophic. As a result, organizations must remain constantly on high alert. In fact, a recent survey by digital threat management company RiskIQ found that 89% of all information security leaders are concerned about the rise of digital threats across web, social, and mobile channels.

2. Cyber threats are on the rise
Cybersecurity risks are growing in both the prevalence and magnitude of breaches. Attacks on companies nearly doubled in five years, according to the World Economic Forum's 2018 Global Risks Report. Attacks against businesses nearly doubled in five years, according to the Cybersecurity in Business Report in 2016, the global cost of cybercrime is projected to reach $6 trillion by 2021.

3. Connected devices increase vulnerability
IT professionals must not only ensure that their internal devices are protected, but they must also defend against threats that target external computers that can connect to their networks. If you think your environment is somehow immune to these dangers, consider this: Forecasts predict that there will be some 75.4 billion connected devices by 2025, and the vast amount of data generated by these devices will continue to grow exponentially as well.

4. A UPS is not enough
Connected devices allow you to continuously monitor and diagnose the state of your environment. Monitoring your UPS without remote capability is like driving in the rain without wipers: you may be protected from downpour, but your visibility is hampered. With a network card with cybersecurity, you can remotely monitor and control the operation of your UPS safely and reliably. This feature keeps you informed of issues as they occur, ensuring uptime in the event of a prolonged power outage.

5. Connectivity is everything
Network cards enable secure monitoring and control of an individual UPS by connecting it directly to the network. This connectivity is the conduit for your device's data and information, providing status, alerts, and remote capabilities. Notifications keep you informed of issues as soon as they occur, helping you keep your business information safe.

6. Industry standards and best practices are important
The UL 2900 standard for software cybersecurity for networkable products (UL 2900) includes comprehensive processes for testing devices for security vulnerabilities, software weaknesses, and malware. Consider products that meet industry standards. Such as the cybersecurity standards UL 2900-1 and IEC 62443-4-2.

7. Reduce your cybersecurity risk today
Eaton's Gigabit network card is the first in the industry to receive UL 2900-1 certification, ensuring it has been reviewed, tested and met the brand's quality standards. Encryption and password management are two key improvements. Beyond the security update, the Gigabit network card offers higher speed; support for better performing and widely deployed gigabit network switches.

In addition, users get a real-time clock with battery backup and link to the NTP server; increased memory for better operation and greater data storage; a modern user experience with the latest web technology; and secure SMTP for email alerts.
