Google protects its data centers with biometric iris identification technology

Google Data CentersUnited States. Following a selection process that included a series of on-site meetings and demonstrations at select locations, followed by different stages of implementation, both locally and internationally, iris recognition became a crucial part of Google's 6-layer security protocol. The first stage involved iCAM4000 iris scanner deployments for contactless authentication in high-security areas in Mountain View, Iowa, Dallas, and NY.

The data center deployment process has been going on over the past few years, and in some places, deployments are still ongoing. Data centers have already gone through a couple of generations of Iris id products and different integrators, ranging from Siemens, Tyco and Northland to ADT and MCDean.

Technology provides fewer false rejections and one registration is sufficient. According to this forecast, the technology has been implemented primarily in Tier 1 data centers globally, as a cost-effective solution. Iris Access has so far been used in data centers in the US, Ireland, Finland, Belgium and Asia.

The Iris Access platform has been implemented for access control in many mantraps and single-entry access with anti-piggybacking locations, within Google's data center implementations.

Google's approach to data security
Data centers are protected with multiple layers of security to prevent any unauthorized access to your data. Secure perimeter defense systems, full camera coverage, Iris-based biometric authentication, and a 24/7 on-call staff are used. In addition, they enforce a strict access and security policy in their data centers and ensure that all staff are trained to care about security.

They also have local and regional security operations centers that cover the entire fleet of data centers. These SOCs monitor and respond to alarms throughout your facility and are constantly tracking local and global events that could impact operations in your data centers. Security teams also conduct tests throughout the year to ensure they are always prepared to respond to any situation. And along with routine testing, teams run a robust enterprise risk management program to proactively assess and mitigate any risk to data centers.
