Commitment to the transformation of smart and safe cities

Latin America. Axis Communications, ISS and Radwin strengthen their partnership to create solutions for security and data management in cities. This joint work is done through the analysis of connections, images, devices and cloud technologies.

The need to make cities "smart" arises mainly from the accelerated growth of the world's population, according to the World Bank it is expected that 60% of the inhabitants live in urban areas. By receiving so many people, cities will need to improve their safety, transportation system, health, environment, among others, and one of the most effective ways to achieve this is through technological tools.

Francisco Rodríguez, Manager of Professional Services of Axis mentions: "Security is a priority for all the inhabitants of a city, and when there is insecurity, companies are affected, in addition to damaging the image and reputation of cities. That is why at Axis we have been developing smart city projects, which seek to improve all safety conditions in the different verticals that compose it".

The development of projects that improve security in large cities is a great task in which different actors are required to be carried out, it must be made clear that both public and private actors must unite to contribute to the development of smart cities. Citizens should also be encouraged to learn about new technologies, which impede the administration and execution of processes that improve the quality of life within cities in a timely manner.

Axis shows that it has an interest in supporting these processes of growth and improvement in digital security. The company has had successful experiences of solutions for safe cities in partnership with ISS, a leading provider of service integration; and Radwin, a telecommunications company and point-to-point and multipoint wireless broadband products.

Citizen surveillance presents major challenges and security approaches. In order to protect a city from multiple threats, have a control and the different roles of citizen assistance, technology with a robust, resistant and proven architecture is required. The urban surveillance solution provided by Axis, Radwin and ISS focuses on an all-in-one platform and offers:

Video monitoring: which can be easily integrated with other platforms such as fire alarm panels, building control or biometric systems, which allow to improve security processes.

Video analytics: including plate reading and facial recognition that automate and improve security processes. Identified characters can be recognized when entering an area, whether underground or a building, which generates automatic alerts to the authorities. The license plate recognition system allows authorities to track suspicious vehicles in real time. In addition, it allows to detect abandoned objects, to avoid possible threats.

Simple and distributed installations: For installations of a single geographical place or the ability to control multiple systems distributed geographically, this being one of the main functionalities of this solution. There is no limitation on the number of sites, cameras or devices, allowing very large installations to be controlled and monitored completely from the same platform. All solutions are scalable, so the system can grow as facilities require it.

Savings in time and cost: Interconnectivity and instant alarms, necessary for real-time control of transport safety, whether air, sea or land. A truly easy-to-use solution that creates economies of scale, allowing departments at the federal, state, or municipal levels, including commercial and logistics agents, to communicate with each other, and share information.

Performance indicators: Crucial for any industry. The solution enables the reduction of problems and fraud in points of sale, improves the security of customers and personnel, with a single system, simplifies the installation and training processes, which leads to savings in time and money of all types of industries.

In order to ensure the continuity and integrity of these services, video surveillance plays an important role. The technological systems that monitor and control a smart city must be designed taking into account the principles of robustness, reliability, resilience, privacy and integrity of information.

The comprehensive solution offered by Axis, Radwin and ISS improve the operation of control and surveillance systems for digital video and audio recording, optimize image processing and data transmission. The entire system delivered by this alliance can be integrated into access controls, fire alarms, and is open to compatibility with third-party systems. In addition, products can be implemented in banks, office complexes, manufacturing facilities, supermarkets, petrochemical facilities, marinas, stadiums, casinos, hospitals, schools, etc.

"Our collaboration strategy is to improve the recognition, emergency prevention, control, optimization of solutions and products that we offer to the market, so that it is possible to add value for our end users who in the first instance are the ones who receive the benefit of well-implemented projects in the city," says Alberto Becerra, Sales Manager of Radwin.

Solutions around information beyond storage

Currently, the information that a city generates is arbitrarily stored by different institutions and is not shared. The companies in charge of providing the security of a city are too oriented to perform vertical data analysis and generate reports with this data. You must change the paradigm and move from performing analysis with reports to performing analysis in real time.

Information is the main value that cities have, both to improve the quality of life of the people who live in it and to optimize the proper functioning of it. Hence, it is essential that this data is controlled and protected. However, something more is needed. Axis, Radwin and ISS manage, process and leverage this data for the benefit of people and turn it into a competitive variant, which translates into the development of new ways to anticipate any problem.

"The market generates pressure and we want to respond by sensorizing everything, we believe that by putting sensors, cameras and monitors we will manage the city effectively. If we add to this situation the suspicion in sharing processes, data and that we are oriented to reaction, the result is inefficiency. There is data that every city generates, distributed and disconnected from each other that results in slow and expensive analysis processes. And with all this information that we extract we lack the most important thing, to concretize the benefit of the citizen. We solve this situation using tools that analyze transversally and over the territory the information from vertical solutions, "says Lilian Rosenberg  Distributor Account Manager of ISS.

When citizens are referred to as end users, improving efficiency in the  provision of services becomes a fundamental goal of any sector, public or private, and knowing in depth their needs requires strengthening communication channels between all institutions and citizens. In this sense, a new class of citizens is emerging, which wants to be engaged, proactive that demands greater participation regarding how the services and policies of a city are defined.

"There are two important concepts in our alliance for surveillance and communications solutions, which include information technology: software-defined networking and virtualization; which are the basis for promoting the operation of smart cities and citizen surveillance solutions, in a model that offers simplicity and transparency in procurement, management,  resilience and resistance to failures, "says Arturo Arcos, Business Development Director of ISS.
