IEC Standards Adopt ONVIF Specification for New Access Control Standard

International. ONVIF, the leading global standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products, announced that its latest access control standard has been adopted by the international electrotechnical commission CEI (IEC) global standards group as its new standard for electronic access control systems. In this way, the ONVIF specification is positioned as the universal standard for access control in countries, projects and industries around the world.

The inclusion of the ONVIF specification by the IEC, which is playing an important role in the ongoing development of the Internet of Things (IoT) by establishing interoperability between electronic devices, marks the second time that the ONVIF specifications have become global IEC standards  , paving the way for ONVIF to be adopted internationally as part of security projects.

"The adoption of the ONVIF specification for access control by the IEC constitutes a decisive ratification of the strength and scope of ONVIF," said Per Björkdahl, Director of the ONVIF Steering Committee. "It also reflects collaboration across industries and multiple disciplines for better interoperability, the importance of which is growing day by day."

The IEC 60839-11 system and the component requirements standard for alarm and electronic security systems will adopt the ONVIF standard developed for web-based access control monitoring. Released in late April, IEC 60839-11 specifies the minimum requirements for functionality, performance, and test methods for electronic access control systems and components used for physical access. The standard applies to electronic access control systems and components used in security applications to authorize access, and includes requirements for login, identification, and information control.

The ONVIF specifications were previously included in the 2014 version of IEC 62676 for video surveillance systems, the first international standard established for video surveillance systems. The ONVIF standard for video, which is based on Web Services, is mentioned in IEC 62676, parts 2 and 3, which defines video transmission protocols for communication between network video clients and video transmitting devices. In addition to the recent adoptions of ONVIF standards by the IEC, ONVIF plans to continue to support and collaborate with the IEC in the development of future standards.

The IEC is one of three sister global organizations (IEC, ISO, ITU) that develop international standards for the entire world, and is the leading organization in the preparation and publication of international standards for all electrical, electronic and other related technologies. All IEC international standards are established on the basis of consensus and represent the needs of key stakeholders in each country participating in the work of the IEC.

Founded in 2008, ONVIF is now comprised of approximately 500 member companies on six continents and more than 5500 Profile products compliant with its standards. With profile S for video streaming; the Profile G for recording and storage; The Profile C for physical access control and the Release Candidates Profile A for access control configuration, and the Profile Q for better generic product functionality, ONVIF continues to work with its members to expand the number of IP interoperability solutions that CAN be offered by PRODUCTS THAT COMPLY with ONVIF standards.
