Dominican Republic. The Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier García Fernández, announced the installation of high-tech security devices for the protection of tourists and visitors in the Colonial City and the Malecon of Santo Domingo.
The official assured that the historic city will become the safest of its kind in Latin America.
He also said that the Dominican Republic "is one of the countries in Latin America and in the world where tourists receive the least negative impact as a result of crime."
He indicated that apart from the normal actions of the government that have to do with special programs for the Tourist Police, "in this four-year period the government wants to turn the Tourist Police into the model of all Latin America."
"For this reason, this renovation program includes a technological security program that consists of the placement of a large number of security cameras that will be scattered in the Colonial City and extended to the Malecon of Santo Domingo, which will place the Colonial City, not as the most beautiful colonial city that it is, but also as the safest Colonial City in all of Latin America," he stressed.
He said that the same visitors and the agencies of the main tourist issuing nations that vacation in the country recognize the adequate security climate and the low crime rate in the Dominican tourist poles.
He explained that the surveillance mechanism will complement the training and technification process to which the Tourist Police (Politur) is subjected "to make this a model institution, in terms of security, both in the country and internationally."
