by Santiago Jaramillo Hincapié

Our guest for this edition of the magazine VENTAS DE SEGURIDAD, Mauricio Rojas Carrasco, is born in the city of Toluca, in the State of Mexico, which is very close to Mexico City, is a Public Accountant, and if you continue reading you will understand why he is in the security industry, in which he began installing CCTV equipment to then represent Philips CSI in Mexico and finally reach Bosch Sistemas de Security, a company in which he has worked for ten years and in which for seven years he has been responsible for the Technical Area, which includes technical support, training and the Service Center for repairs and guarantees of the equipment of this company.

In addition, he also currently collaborates in the regional consolidation of Bosch in Latin America, supporting in these same areas, as he maintains, "in order to raise our level of service to our customers throughout the region".

Linking to the industry
From a very young age, Rojas Carrasco was always enthusiastic about having contact with everything that referred to high-tech products or equipment. "I remember as a child having been one of the first that instead of asking for a soccer ball or going out to play in the street, I better ask my dad for high-tech toys of the time, such as video games, far away were still the iPad and iPod, not even the laptops, rather they were video games like the Atari 1600, Comodore 64 computers, plus I've always liked radio-controlled planes and helicopters," says our guest.

Another of Mauricio's hobbies are "film cameras"; he remembers that his dad had a camera to record family vacations when he was still a child, using super8 cartridges to then project them cinema-like.

"Whenever I had the opportunity I used it; I also liked to experiment with his 35mm camera and take a lot of photos, although then I had no money to develop the roll ... because at that time I had to send it to the laboratory and wait a week to see how the photos had come out, if they came out and of course pay for the development, even if none was useful. " says our Professional of the Month, while also pointing out that that is why he now enjoys taking photos with digital cameras and seeing them immediately to correct when they do not go well.

Some time later, when Mauricio reached puberty, he says that he began to attend parties, and at that moment he decided, together with his friends, to form a group of "Light and Sound" gathering the teams that each one had in their homes; then, with the time and success they had, they invested their profits in audio equipment and professional lights so they always had the latest technology available in that decade of the 80's.

"Then came sitting down and studying a professional career that would give me security for my future and more at a time when the economic crisis of the country was our constant and with which we had to get used to living, or rather, survive, because after the whole group of Light and Sound could not continue for this same reason and we had to make sure of a more certain future, that is why I studied Public Accounting, at least to be able to have more job options; however, I never moved away from technology and once I graduated I wanted to resume the idea of having a technology business and being an entrepreneur," says the current manager of the Technical Service Area of the Bosch company.

"After reading a book that said that the Security Industry was always a good business and that it even had growth in times of crisis, I became more encouraged to get involved in the industry. I started doing small CCTV projects with acquaintances, always looking to differentiate myself I looked for products from renowned companies, so in 1997 I met the representative of Philips CSI in Mexico, who, later, invited me to work with him representing that brand, until it was acquired by Bosch in 2002, "says Rojas Carrasco.

A present full of challenges
Moving on to the topic of the challenges he faces daily in his work regarding technology as a manager and in the relationship with his subordinates and collaborators, our guest as Professional of the Month indicates that without a doubt the most important challenge directing the technical support area is to keep support engineers updated in the different disciplines, task that is not easy, because in addition to the technological changes are the own changes that as a company must be had in the solutions and products that are offered.

"Many times also the discipline and self-teaching of the associates is a factor that facilitates this work, because I consider that my work team is highly professional and that for them as for me our work is rather our hobby and we enjoy it very much," he stresses.

Rojas also relates that the objectives that a manager must promote in his associates must be integral with the general objectives that as a company are delimited in the business plans, taking into account that to reach those objectives they must be attached and carried out under the moral principles, values and professional ethics. In addition to observing good business practices, only in that way, our guest highlights, can you have a serious position that invites customers or direct channels to do business with your company and offer your products to your customers or end users. In addition, in this way, it is how the prestige and reputation of a manufacturer is created and that is what end users look for when making a decision when they carry out their projects and choose the manufacturer.

Future and possibilities of the industry
As for what he thinks of the immediate future and the possibilities of expansion of the security industry in the region, the representative of the Bosch company ponders that we are getting used to living with a world that is constantly evolving, changing and with an impressively fast reaction capacity in the markets, because the actions or decisions that are taken in Europe, The U.S., or Asia, affects Latin America almost immediately.

However, as complemented by our Professional of the Month, "it is true that even when the world is going through a time of economic crisis in what we call the first world; Latin America is one of the regions that are taking on greater importance for its high growth potential and relative stability, and that is very good, especially in our industry, because it generates confidence and investment in large projects. For this, it is enough to see how it is investing in Brazil, where the two most important world events (Olympics and World Cup) are being organized with only two years of difference, and that requires a lot of security in all places. "

On the other hand, the manager of the Technical Service Area of the Bosch company explains that the evolution of the industry has been total and constant, "in more than 15 years that I have in the industry I have seen since practically this industry was in diapers and all manufacturers knew each other and we knew the weaknesses and strengths of house one; until now where we have to compete with companies that come from other disciplines such as IT, Networks, Telecommunications, etc., and suddenly turn around and see that there are hundreds of very competitive companies some offering all kinds of innovative security solutions and products. For example, just look at the evolution it has had from its first version to this next eleventh edition of Expo Seguridad Mexico and see the number of participants who arrive every year, "he ponders.

In the same way, Rojas Carrasco believes that education is an aspect that should be more emphasized and that as manufacturers they must help so that the security industry in Mexico and Latin America becomes more professional every day. "We still see that there are many people and companies that come to our industry believing that proposing, installing and maintaining a security system is an easy task."

He adds that "however, this deteriorates the credibility of the entire industry and many of these people are only in business while there is profit, no matter how much they are destroying in the long run. That is why it is important to be able to really achieve regulations and legislation that delimit and regulate all these activities so that they allow us to have a first-world security industry."

Finally, our Professional of the Month states by way of conclusion, that security is an industry that still has a lot of growth and demand, "more and more the so-called technological convergence with other disciplines has been manifesting itself in all areas of electronic security, from IP-based products, to "in the cloud" services and what to say about training and technical support at a distance, among other things that predict that in the future we will see a real revolution in the way we do business and offer services never before imagined, so we will have to be prepared."
