Mexico. The Ministry of Education in Tamaulipas (SET) reported that 89% of the schools in the state lack video surveillance systems to prevent robberies during weekends or holiday seasons and monitor who enters or hovers around the campus. According to the authorities, the program is progressing slowly, because the federation stopped sending resources for security.
In Tamaulipas, only 11% of all schools have video surveillance systems. For at least two years a program was announced to provide video cameras to schools in order to prevent theft, however currently little progress is made if you take into account that only about 400 of a total of 3,500 schools have this security measure.
In this regard, the Secretary of Education in the state, Diódoro Guerra Rodríguez, explained that after the pilot program that began with the current administration, support from the federation was no longer received and hence the progress has not been registered with the speed that is required.
"Still in terms of coverage of the number of schools we have we lack a lot, but we are progressing progressively."
Still, he said that according to preliminary figures, schools in Tamaulipas were less affected by robberies this year, compared to vacation periods back.
