Brazil. Authorities in the city of Vitoria da Conquista, in the state of Bahia, announced that students over the age of 14 will begin wearing what they call "smart uniforms."
These are school clothes with a built-in RFID microchip, usually on the t-shirts, which allows detecting if the child leaves the center before the end of the school day or if he arrives at class late. If this occurs, the microchip sends a text message to the parents.
According to the authorities, this measure could improve the relationship between parents and teachers. It is estimated that some 20,000 students in Vitoria da Conquista will soon have smart uniforms, financed with the US$700,000 contributed by the local government.
The microchip they will carry will usually be camouflaged in the shirts, in areas that allow them to be washed and ironed without damaging the RFID mechanism.
