06/01/12. At the beginning of the year, and with it the good intentions of the population to achieve a better administration of their finances, the Condusef issued a series of measures to make good use of ATMs.
In an informative leaflet, the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (Condusef) stressed that ATMs are much more than devices for withdrawing cash.
ATMs, the agency said, offer multiple services ranging from consulting various statements, including that of the Afore, to acquiring plane tickets or making money transfers to other accounts.
Therefore, he said, it is convenient to make good use of this instrument and take care that it is not counterproductive to go to them, due to the commissions charged for the different operations.
The Condusef stressed that, for example, using an ATM of a bank other than the one that issued the credit or debit card implies a commission for withdrawal and balance consultation.
Likewise, the rate charged at ATMs located in bank branches is lower than those installed in supermarkets, shopping centers, airports, bus terminals, pharmacies, gas stations and convenience stores.
According to the list of the Condusef, first of all the services provided by the ATM must be identified, and that range from balance consultation and bank movements, change of PIN, purchase of airtime and payment of services, among others.
As a second recommendation, it points out that it is necessary to schedule the cash needs, and to know the amount of the commissions it charges, the number of operations at no cost to which you are entitled, and plan the use of the ATM on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis.
Thirdly, it suggests avoiding the use of ATMs from other banks and keeping in mind that the fees for these operations will vary according to the location and commercial line where they are located.
As a fourth tip, it emphasizes the need to keep the vouchers issued by the cashier, as this will allow a record of the movements made, account statements, as well as detect any anomaly.
As a fifth point of this guide, it recommends taking security measures before using an ATM, checking if there is no anomaly or mechanism different from those accustomed, verifying that there are no cameras that can record the PIN of users and avoid asking for help from strangers.
Sixth, insure against assaults, and remember that some banks offer insurance service in case of assault at ATMs, theft or loss of card, and where appropriate raises the possibility of hiring this service.
Finally, it urges you to avoid using the credit card to withdraw cash, because carrying out these operations in the long term generate a debt with the bank, since the withdrawal will be charged on the card statement.
The Condusef stressed that this is why 'it is not advisable to make use of this financing to end the fortnight, nor pay other debts, because this is like uncovering one today to cover another'.
According to circular 22/2010 issued by the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), ATMs must show on the screen the amount of the commission to be charged for the selected service and thus have the option to canelar the operation in case of not being satisfied with this charge.
In case the CASHIER does not deliver the money, delivers it incomplete or retains the card, the agency recommends checking the balance of the account, and calling the customer service center of the bank to which the cashier belongs.
