Colombia. The Ministry of the Interior reported that it will allocate more than US$100 million to the acquisition of video surveillance equipment, aimed at reinforcing the reaction capacity of the authorities.
This government measure comes in response to the increase in crime, as well as the perception of insecurity among citizens.
"Cameras that can recognize people facially, that can then be used to present evidence and with Artificial Intelligence that warn of what may end up happening," Luis Fernando Velasco, head of the ministry, told the media.
A recent survey in which the government participated revealed that 70% of the group surveyed have had problems with their neighbors because of noise, while 44% have had problems with them because of fights and 40% because of drugs, garbage or pets.
Meanwhile, 67% think that "there is no fear of being punished for violating issues of coexistence," which contrasts with the fact that 75% perceive a permanent presence of the National Police in their neighborhood.
"Since we had the study, we focused all the resources of the National Fund for Security and Citizen Coexistence on this type of program. We aspire to approve the first major security project in 20 cities, whose mayors expressed their interest in co-financing," Velasco said.
