Chile. In 2014, the government of the town of Rengo started a project to digitize services for citizens. The initiative included the modernization of education, health, video surveillance systems and public Internet programs, among others.
In addition, several channels for employees of the Municipality were intervened such as telephony, Internet, an ERP platform, file storage, messaging and video calls.
As expected, this positive change involved a review of the cybersecurity strategy. Therefore, four years later a plan was executed to improve the IT infrastructure, focused on online security. The main challenge was to protect the data center, endpoints, network infrastructure and ensure continuity of operations for citizens.
The authorities then chose to implement the solutions developed by SonicWall, including NGFWs of the NSa 3600 series, Email Security and Capture Client. In this way, they managed to have an adaptable and scalable cybersecurity infrastructure.
In addition, with the support of SonicWall and Telefónica TECH, they built a solid and resilient technology platform that ensures continuity of services. In this regard, SonicWall provided the essential technology to safeguard the sensitive information and data of the inhabitants of Rengo.
"The benefits of SonicWall technology were tangible almost immediately, spam problems were eradicated in just two weeks, vulnerability to phishing and even ransomware attacks was reduced. The orchestration we achieved from the proofs of concept to the last detail of the configuration made the objective be met," explains Alejandro Perez, regional sales manager for the Southern Cone of the company.
Increase in quality of life
Currently, the community living in Rengo can access a wide variety of health services, including telemedicine, laboratory tests, care for patients in a state of prostration and management of electronic medical records. This last service allows medical staff to closely monitor the health of patients. In terms of education, the Municipality has a virtual classroom system and provides online educational resources.

In essence, we found a partner who understood our cybersecurity needs, taking into account our social approach and the needs of our users," said Andrés Roldán, Director of Innovation and Management at the Municipality of Rengo.
Currently the town enjoys a high availability of operating and corporate services; immediate and secure access to municipal services; management of cybersecurity policies in the network; Reduction of threats in work devices of employees and protection of data and critical infrastructure.
Winners of the National Public Innovation Contest
At the end of June it was known that the Municipality of Rengo won the Contest Funciona! 2022, coordinated annually by the Civil Service. The competition brings together state administration agencies throughout the country, in search of innovative solutions to improve the quality and efficiency of their services.
