Brazil tests transport service with facial recognition

IdemiaBrazil. The 100% Digital Boarding System Project "Boarding + Insurance", using the Brazilian government's facial recognition, recently arrived at Congonhas Airport (SP).

For the first time in the world, passengers of the air transport service between the capitals of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro will participate in the simultaneous test of facial recognition technology without the need to present a boarding pass or identification document.

The Project of the Ministry of Infrastructure, developed in partnership with Serpro and the Special Secretariat of Debureaucratization, Management and Digital Government of the Ministry of Economy, has already been tested at the airports of Florianópolis (SC), Salvador (BA), Santos Dumont. (RJ) and Belo Horizonte (Confins).

After the approval of the pilot project, the Federal Government will move forward with actions to effectively implement the technology in the main Brazilian airports. The technology aims to make the boarding process at airports more efficient, agile and safe.

"It is the first time that tests have been carried out simultaneously at two of our airports, thus establishing, in an unprecedented way, a 100% biometric air shuttle between RJ / SP, which has the fifth largest movement in the world." Said the executive secretary of MInfra, Marcelo Sampaio.

Throughout the day, Azul Linhas Aéreas passengers traveling between Congonhas and Santos Dumont airports will be invited to test biometric facial recognition technology to access both the boarding area and aircraft in both terminals.

"Boarding + Insurance combines biometric validation and data analysis, ensuring accurate, agile and secure validation of the identity of passengers, who can travel with greater comfort and peace of mind. The solution complies with the General Data Protection Law (LGPD) and has as its premise the security in the processing of personal data against improper or unauthorized use, "said Gilen Barreto, president of Serpro.

"The Boarding + Insurance of the air ferry unites two essential elements that streamline the boarding processes, which are safety and ease for the passenger and the entire civil aviation system," explained the president of Infraero, Brigadier Paes de Barros.

"The latest Global Passenger Research conducted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) says that 70% of respondents are willing to share their biometrics for identification purposes during the boarding process. Our global experience contributes to meeting society's need to fly again. Participating in the first air shuttle with a fully digitized end-to-end boarding system, at both airports, is an important milestone in our history," commented Rodrigo Costa, PSI's director of business development at Idemia LATAM.

Upon check-in at the airport, the azul Linhas Aéreas passenger is invited to participate in the project. If the passenger agrees, then a message is sent to the cell phone informed in the application, requesting authorization to obtain the passenger's data, including the social security number and a photo. With prior consent, the airline assistant, using the application developed by Serpro for this purpose, performs the biometric validation of the citizen, comparing the data and the photo taken on the spot with the government databases.

MFACE technology, developed by Idemia, captures facial biometrics in seconds, further streamlining the boarding process, avoiding queues and delays. The solution combines the convenience and security of data validation, respecting the privacy of passengers according to the GDPR, and ensures a more hygienic process by eliminating the manipulation of documents and paper, thus avoiding the risk of contamination.

After being validated, the passenger is released to enter the departure lounge and the aircraft passes through biometric control points, whose cameras perform the identification of the passenger without the need for the user to present any document or boarding pass.

The pilot project measures indicators such as reduced waiting time, access to the departure lounge and aircraft, as well as operating costs. With the tests, airport security is expected to increase, as facial recognition allows for accurate identification of passengers.
