Latin America. A new networking concept that presents an innovative form of connectivity is SD-WAN, a software-defined method of managing the WAN that is an alternative solution to traditionally used software-defined networks. This concept has been implemented in SISSA Monitoring Integral solutions.
What is SD-WAN?
SD-WAN is a key concept for the digital transformation process of any company, organization or infrastructure in general thanks to its multiple advantages for the optimization of the different connectivity processes carried out in them.
With this technology it is possible to improve the performance of applications and their agility through the definition of configurations (ports, capacities, policies, etc.) and their ability to make modifications expeditiously; In addition, with SD-WAN it is possible to simplify operations through cloud management and automation, allowing you to schedule activities, updates and network management through the mobile (router, switch, access point, equipment, etc.).
SD-WAN also allows you to optimize costs by categorizing traffic, mitigating operating expenses and for its transport independence (virtual network tunnels), unlike the traditional WAN that requires exclusive MPLS circuits that need a large investment to ensure network security and a reliable connection.
Advantages of SD-WAN over traditional WAN
Similarly, in contrast to the traditional WAN, this software-defined method makes it possible to optimize resource usage in remote site deployments; use bandwidth more efficiently; obtain high performance for critical applications; and integration with companies dedicated to the detection of threats such as identity theft, information theft, scams and denial of services.
Speaking specifically of network security, SD-WAN ensures secure connectivity through various protection actions such as network and traffic segmentation, layer 3 policy creation, layer 7 content filtering, VPN tunneling (Site to Site & Client to Site), and its availability to integrate with Active Directory (AD) and Radius authentication servers.
To implement this technology and ensure that the devices have a correct communication with the network of the service hosted in the cloud, it is only necessary to have internet service, gateway and DNS, which will guarantee the possibility of creating new networks, network segments and virtual circuits with remote offices; create, configure, and enforce group and content filtering policies; check the operating status of VPNs; visualize in real time the health status of the equipment and the loss of information (degradation of services); automate firmware; add inventories and devices; among other things.
In conclusion, SD-WAN is a solution implemented by SISSA Monitoring Integral that aims to drive the digital transformation of any infrastructure through an improvement in the application experience, simplified management, optimized connectivity in the cloud, and greater security in connectivity.
