International. According to data acquired by Atlas VPN, 82% of CISOs and CIOs plan to deploy a 5G connection in the next 6 to 12 months.
5G is the newest and most advanced mobile network aimed at providing ten times faster internet speed compared to 4G technology, as well as drastically improving connectivity between IoT devices.
The study reveals that up to 53% of CIOs and CISOs plan to adopt 5G within 6 months. In addition, 14% of respondents believe that the adoption of 5G will lead to higher spending on security and control systems.
Nearly a third of respondents, 29%, say they will adopt a 5G network at their company in the next 12 months. However, 17% of IT leaders said they have no plans to deploy 5G in the next 12 months.
It's worth noting that industries are turning to 5G at different rates. The fastest adopter seems to be health services. More than 93% of healthcare providers say they will adopt 5G in the next 12 months.
The reason is that 5G communication will be ultra reliable without loss of connection and will be very useful for critical services in the healthcare industry.
For example, remote robotic surgery could be drastically improved. Procedures like these require high-definition video streaming, low latency, and massive bandwidth, which 5G provides.
Similarly, more than 77% of representatives of financial firms said they would adopt 5G in the next 12 months. Financial institutions are eager to adopt 5G as it will create new possibilities for storing and protecting value, moving money and accessing credit. The excellent 5G connection speed will improve daily transactions and investment trading.
Not only that, but 5G is also expected to provide greater security for financial and other institutions. With more data coming in due to faster networks, fraud prevention systems will be able to detect fraudulent transactions more quickly.
The data is based on a survey conducted by VMware Carbon Black, which questioned representatives of 250 U.S. companies operating in different industries, including but not limited to finance, healthcare and government. The research takes into account data from March 2019 to March 2020.
3.23 billion 5G connections by 2025
It is estimated that 5G adoption will skyrocket over the next five years. Estimates reveal that by 2025, 5G connections will reach 3.23 billion globally. That is, the average annual growth is projected to be around 97%.
The research forecasts that 5G network connections will reach 570 million next year, representing a growth of 256% from 2020.
As early as 2022, the number of 5G connections is projected to surpass the billion mark. Researchers predict that by the end of 2022, there will be more than 1.22 billion 5G connections worldwide.
5G adoption is expected to continue to grow at a rapid pace and, by 2025, will reach a staggering 3.23 billion connections. In other words, from 2020 to 2025, 5G connections will grow by a staggering 1919%.

China is in the lead
The biggest adopter of 5G technology is expected to be China. China is on track to reach nearly 100 million 5G connections by 2020 and surpass the billion mark by 2024. So far this year, 4 out of 10 mobile phones purchased in China have 5G enabled.
China continues to deploy its network and is poised to build more than 1 million 5G base stations by the end of the year.
Although the fifth-generation network is relatively new, it is one of the fastest growing technology markets not only in China but around the world. The 5G technology industry is estimated to reach $5.53 billion by the end of 2020 and $667.90 billion by 2026.
As a final note, although the COVID-19 pandemic will slow down 5G adoption in the short term, the long-term outlook still looks promising.
