The important Mexican university, recognized for its innovation in the educational field, implemented an access control system to increase the feeling of security for its users.

Tecmilenio is a private educational institution in Mexico that was founded in 2002. It currently has about 50,000 students. Within its portfolio of programs, this entity offers high school, bilingual high school, professional careers and master's degrees. It has 28 campuses nationwide and is distinguished by being the only university in the world that integrates the purpose of life in its educational model.
This institution is affiliated with important associations such as the National Association of Universities and Institutions of Higher Education (ANUIES) and the Federation of Private Mexican Institutions of Higher Education (FIMPES), but also has signed more than 40 academic exchange agreements with universities outside Mexico.
Currently, the educational community of The Tecmilenio University is made up – in addition to the aforementioned students – of 4,500 teachers who work on its 28 campuses and at Tecmilenio Online, the online university.
The entity has a presence in 25 cities and 19 states of the Mexican Republic, with headquarters in cities such as Cancun, Chihuahua, Ciudad Juárez, Cuernavaca, Guadalajara (north and south), Toluca, Querétaro, Nuevo Laredo, Veracruz and Mérida.
For Tecmilenio, the well-being and happiness of its students and graduates is a priority; hence the importance of offering them easy access, in a convenient and controlled manner, which directly benefits the entire educational community, and gives parents the certainty that their children are in reliable environments.
A tailor-made solution
Tecmilenio installed, a solution that includes turnstiles and pens to control access. The turnstiles, supplied by Boon Edam, were integrated into the existing access control system.
It should be noted that the selection of this manufacturer was due to the set of products endorsed by commercial agreements that have been established at the corporate level and that determine the solutions that will allow achieving the highest efficiencies. This means that there was a process carried out by the universities and within this consensus the best technologies for different needs are defined.
According to Juan Ramsés Herrera, TECmilenio's IT director, this process is carried out based on institutional standards that involve a careful selection of suppliers.
In this case the selected equipment were the references TST-75ES2CA (73 units) and THG-42ES (28 units). These equipment are available in 25 of the 29 campuses of the university, among which are those located in San Nicolás, Guadalupe, Toluca, Guadalajara and Hermosillo, among others. Herrera emphasizes that this system is complemented by monitoring, security personnel and pens at the vehicular accesses.
Despite the fact that there are other brands in the market that manufacture access control solutions, for Tecmilenio the scope of the project determined that Boon Edam equipment was the most appropriate technology due to its size and scope.
According to spokespersons of this entity, another aspect that helped them to opt for Boon Edam was the aesthetic factor of the equipment of the Dutch brand, which was aligned with the expectations of appearance of the university.
Juan Ramsés also confirmed that the specific need that was intended to be covered by the turnstiles of Boon Edam was to protect the periphery. Additionally, the teams had to efficiently control the entry and exit of the 150,000 people who daily access the headquarters of the institution where they are installed.
Analyzing performance
Indisputably, this institution posed a series of challenges in terms of security parameters in access control. For example, for turnstiles and doors for the disabled, three fundamental elements had to be considered: blind cabinets (those that do not have the arms of the turnstile, but that serve to block a lane, giving the possibility of putting these equipment to work in the direction in which it is needed), the visual indication (green and red arrows) and the faculty of managing the tourniquet scheme leaving it open or closing after the passage of the user. It is even possible to program the tourniquet to be open for a defined period of time.
For the spokespersons of the institution, the performance of the Boon Edam teams has been as expected and has allowed to increase the feeling of security within the community of Tecmilenio, although it has been a preventive and not corrective measure.
