International. The price of the deal with the camera maker shows that Amazon is looking to do more than sell another popular camera, as analysts thought. Other interests move in the business.
Amazon.com Inc last year paid about $90 million for home security camera maker Blink, in a secret bid for the startup's energy-efficient chips, sources familiar with the matter said.
The price of the deal, which had not previously been reported, shows that Amazon is looking to do more than sell another popular camera, as analysts thought.
Blink's chips could lower Amazon's production costs and increase the battery life of other devices, starting with the Cloud Cam, one of the sources said.
The Cloud Cam currently needs to be plugged into a power source to work, but this could change with Blink, which says its cameras can last up to two years with as few as a couple of lithium AA batteries.
Amazon declined to comment on the terms and strategy of the acquisition.
The deal, until now, had generated little attention. The camera maker announced that it was bought by Amazon in minute detail in a blog post on Dec. 21.
Analysts see Blink as part of Amazon Key's strategy, a program in which customers can place a smart lock and security camera so delivery staff can leave packages inside their homes when customers are away.
