Latin America. Milestone Systems, the open platform IP video management software company, announces a radical improvement in video decoding performance thanks to the use of Intel Quick Sync Video technology, which dramatically reduces the operating costs of Milestone solutions and significantly accelerates data transfer.
Computers running Intel Quick Sync Video technology use the specialized media processing capabilities of Intel Graphics Technology to efficiently decode video streams in the H.264 format. The latest version of Milestone's XProtect® Smart Client leverages this capability to achieve savings of more than 80 percent in processor resource utilization. Intel's chipset and instructions decode the video stream, freeing the processor to perform other tasks.
Thanks to the increased efficiency in the performance of the video system, Milestone users can save costs on the number of workstations required by the customer. By upgrading to the XProtect® 2016 version with the XProtect® Smart Client, users can manage more high-definition (HD) cameras, improving the continuity and sharpness of video images.
An increasing number of security installations require support for cameras with ultra HD 4K resolution. To monitor large environments, such as cities, high-priority infrastructures, heavy traffic environments, etc. cameras with 4K HD resolution cover larger areas, while retaining details when making large zooms in the images. Although the video image is displayed on a relatively small screen, the ultra HD 4k resolution stream allows the operator to zoom in on a specific area of interest without sacrificing image quality on the monitor. It is critical that the VMS and its customers be able to decode and play multiple 4K ultra HD resolution cameras at the standard playback speed of 25/30 frames per second as Milestone's software currently does.
In tests conducted by Milestone engineers and documented in Intel's new white paper, the same client computer managed to process five times as many video streams using XProtect® Smart Client 2016 with Intel's capabilities to accelerate the computers, compared to the 2014 version of the client.
"Milestone's XProtect® 2016 software leverages the Intel Quick Sync Video technology built into some Intel processors to enable the smooth viewing of full HD video from up to 25 cameras simultaneously on a budget, single-connector, quad-core client PC with a next-generation Intel Core i7 processor. That's equivalent to playing 25 Blu-Ray movies at the same time without losing a single frame!" said Reinier Tuinzing, strategic alliances manager for the Americas at Milestone Systems. "The solution can also support multiple 4K cameras with ultra HD resolution with continuous video at 25/30 frames per second. These performance parameters make a fundamental difference in the security industry."
This means that users can upgrade an XProtect® solution to manage more cameras, without needing to purchase new client equipment. On the other hand, the additional capacity could be used to process video cameras with ultra HD 4K resolution and thus improve the visualization of image details. In installations with the new XProtect®, cheaper PCs can be used, thanks to the better performance of the XProtect® Smart Client 2016.
"In every aspect of Milestone's business model, partnerships are important. When this joint work results in innovative developments that represent breakthroughs for our customers, both in terms of performance and costs, it is truly exciting. This important breakthrough was made possible by the close collaboration between Intel and Milestone, and it has been a great pleasure to work together to enhance the capabilities of the XProtect® Smart Client," concluded Hans Jørgen Skovgaard, Vice President of Research, Development and Support at Milestone Systems.
