14/10/2011. Mexico ranks first in the presence of types of cybercrime with 71 percent of these in its network, as revealed by norton's CyberCrime Report, Symantec.
The most common, and most avoidable, attack is malware or computer viruses, explains the study, which reports that Brazil and China rank second in the presence of such attacks with 68 percent, followed by South Africa with 65 percent.
Likewise, Mexico ranks third in number of victims of cyber attacks, only below China and South Africa.
In the publication of the report it is detailed that cybercrime is stronger than other types of crimes:
"Cybercrime is larger than the black market for marijuana, cocaine and heroin which combined add up to $295 billion in spending worldwide and approaches the value of the global drug trade of $411 billion."
A total of $388 billion is the expenses produced by cybercrime activities that online adults in 24 countries (developed and developing) had to pay in the last year, the report said.
With these figures, cybercrime exceeds more than 100 times UNICEF's annual expenditures of 3,650 million dollars, the publication states.
Similarity in countries with physical crime rates
The figures have a similarity to and without connection on crime, as Adam Palmer, Norton's Lead Cyber Security Advisor, said: "These latest statistics are similar to crime rates in the physical world, where young adults and men are victims of cybercrime more often," Palmer said.
He said that countries such as South Africa and Brazil, with the rates of physical crimes against people that are the highest in the world, clearly also emerge as capitals of cybercrime.
"The results also show that geography and language are not barriers for cybercriminals, who reside in various countries with malicious behavior, as we know," concludes the Norton advisor.
Adults in developing countries, the most affected
The study by the internet security company states that 80 percent of adults in emerging markets have been victims, compared to 64 percent of adults in developed markets.
A total of 431 million adults suffered cybercrime attacks in the last year where more than one million users became victims every day.
54 percent of online adults have suffered attacks from computer viruses or malware of which 58 percent of these victims have been attacked in the last 12 months.
10 percent of all adults surveyed suffered cybercrime attacks on their mobile devices.
Dangerous Online Habits Raise Cybercrime Levels
More than half of the victims of cyber grievance accepted that cybercrime is a risk that all users take when accessing the internet.
Norton's report recorded that 80 percent of attacks happened because the user accesses adult content: "8 out of 10 of users who watch adult content online have suffered cybercrime attacks as opposed to 67 percent who do not see adult content."
Another trigger for the attacks is giving false data on the web: "78 percent of users who have lied about their personal data online have suffered cybercrime attacks."
The third catalyst for malware presence is the use of free Wifi with 77 percent presence of attacks on those who use this service.
Norton calls for a proper security system: "Inadequate security software unnecessarily exposes users to the dangers of computer viruses and malware."
This is in addition to the need for users to be online where two out of five adults say they cannot live without the internet and a third say they have an absolute need for social networks.
