10/10/2011. Current technology could make it possible to prevent crimes that have not yet been committed, as did the precog and the PreCrimen department in the future described by 'Minority Report' (Steven Spielberg, 2002). U.S. authorities are testing the new system with volunteers, 'FAST' (Future Attribute Screening Technology), a technological project that will allow predicting possible crimes.
According to the internal document of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), this mechanism aims to build a detection prototype center based on factors such as ethnicity, gender, breathing and heart rate.
In that sense, 'FAST' is designed to track body movements, voice tone changes, changes in prosody (alterations in the rhythm and intonation of speech), eye movements, changes in body heat and breathing patterns.
Likewise, the director of this program, Robert Middleton, has stated that this project refers to a "limited" initial test with employees of this department. In addition, these are "sensors that non-intrusively collect video images, audio recordings, and psychophysiological measurements of employees," he said.
The location where this test has been conducted has not been disclosed, but DHS has publicly suggested that this system could be used at airport checkpoints.
On the other hand, the Department of Science and Technology Management has carried out a preliminary investigation in the operations to determine the feasibility of using non-invasive technology of physiological and behavioral sensors and observation techniques, since, according to this entity, "they are often associated with the intention to do harm."
Finally, the lawyer of the EPIC (Electronic Privacy Information Center) McCall, has pressured the DHS to obtain these internal documents, since it raises the doubt that the people who have participated in this study have not been informed.
