What is Long Range Wi-Fi

7 September, 2011 by fransberns

Along with network security and connection speed, one of the main concerns of Wi-Fi network users is to have long-range Wi-Fi, either because of the existence of shadow areas where the signal is poor or because of the need to connect Wi-Fi clients at distances greater than 100 m. To be able to have long-range Wi-Fi we have numerous options, being able to act both on the client Wi-Fi terminals and on the issuing Access Point.

Long-range Wi-Fi connections

Wi-Fi connections are currently one of the main ways to access the Internet. One of the issues that most interests users is to improve the signal and achieve long-range Wi-Fi, either by the existence of shadow areas or by trying to connect Wi-Fi clients at distances greater than 100 m.

Optimize long-range Wi-Fi

To improve the Wi-Fi wireless signal and have long-range Wi-Fi we have several options, depending on the use, budget and needs of the user, being able to act on the sender or on the receiver.

Measures to be adopted in Wi-Fi clients to have long-range Wi-Fi:

Network card configuration: Some Wi-Fi network cards can be configured to increase signal strength, since by default they are usually configured in power saving mode. Drivers: The drivers of all devices must be updated to the latest version. Antenna: if our network card has a connector for external antenna, we can connect a higher performance antenna. Network card: if the network card of a Wi-Fi client works in the 802.11b standard instead of 802.11g/n, it should be changed, since it will slow down the entire network. Some network cards incorporate external antenna, which increases their ability to receive the Wi-Fi signal.

Measures to be adopted at the Access Point to have long-range Wi-Fi:

Interference: to have long-range Wi-Fi we must avoid everything that interferes with the signal, such as physical obstacles and metal objects, as well as those devices that compete for the signal in the frequency of 2.4 Gigahertz, such as DECT phones, Bluetooth devices or other Wi-Fi devices.Canal: the Wi-Fi transmitter has several channels, so it is convenient to locate the one with less interference and tune it into our network. Location: The Access Point for long-range Wi-Fi should be located in the center of gravity of the house, to minimize shadow areas. Antenna: if our router allows it, we can install a higher performance antenna. Amplifiers: One of the most effective options for long-range Wi-Fi is to use a Wi-Fi amplifier, either as a main Access Point or as a repeater. The Wi-Fi amplifiers connect to the ADSL router and increase the coverage radius, being able to use several simultaneously to cover a larger area.
