Core conferences of the ALAS Management Summit

altIn the last edition we talked about the headquarters that we have already defined to carry out the ALAS Management Summit this year. We also mention the names of some of the speakers who will make this Summit an event to remember. During these months we will continue with the mention of what its great event represents for the association, and that is why we will be giving more information about the core of the event, the conference program.

As we mentioned last month, the first keynote lecture will be given by the Professor in Economics, Julio Sergio Ramírez who will make a presentation on "The Management of the XXI Century". In it he will make a comparative analysis of what it meant to manage a company in the twentieth century, what it means to do it in the twenty-first century and the practical consequences that this implies for the directors and heads of companies.

Professor Ramírez is a Civil Engineer, from Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá, Colombia; has an MBA from INCAE; holds a master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University; and holds a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University.

Dr. Ramírez has been working since November 2001 as Full Professor of INCAE in the area of General Business Management. With these credentials and being represented by one of the best business schools in Latin America, such as INCAE, the presence of Professor Ramírez will begin a two-day day and 10 conferences that will enrich all the directors of companies that will attend the August meeting in Panama.

Following this first keynote we will have a two-hour workshop with the specialist in personal motivation and renowned international speaker, Ely Magendzo. Ely is an expert and guru in strategy best practices, management and staff motivation.

Among his experience is having been director of training and marketing (for Latin America) in the dealer program of ADT, the largest company in the world of installation and monitoring of alarms. Ely is an engineer by profession, earning a postgraduate degree in 1986 and an MBA in 1992. Ely's presentations are characterized by a lot of energy, entertainment and a lot of interaction with the participants.

These two conferences are the opener of the main program of the ALAS Summit, which we designed based on the opinion polls conducted among the managers and directors attending the one held last year in Miami. In addition to the two mentioned, there will be 8 more conferences, two of them by large security end users such as Laureate International Universities and the ACP (Panama Canal Authority).

So don't miss this Management Summit. You simply need to attend to learn with the best.  Reverse your place by writing to Jennifer Cardona in [email protected] or calling her at 786-299-5105. Places are limited.

I would like, through this rostrum, to send a greeting of recognition and congratulations to BOSCH Security Systems, whose parent company, BOSCH, is commemorating the 125th anniversary of its foundation. We are proud to have BOSCH Security Systems as our corporate partner and look forward to continuing to work from the helm of this great company for the growth of the security industry. Congratulations!

A great greeting to all,

Carlos Guzmán, 30 years at the service of security
ALAS is proud to have among its instructors Carlos Guzman, who in 2011 celebrates 30 years of activity in the security industry.

"I'm not of the idea that knowledge has to be kept. What good is that knowledge in the grave?"

The Beginnings
Since he was a child he was attracted to the security area. His games with plastic soldiers were not about war but about rescue. With sisal threads he made pulleys to lift the stretchers with the wounded soldiers, which he made with pencils and scrap cloth from his mother's seamstress.

At the age of 11 he entered the body of boyscouts, where he acquired very important values for his whole life. In adolescence he joined rescue groups and there he really defined his vocation for the area of security.

Carlos Guzman Díaz, a Venezuelan born in Caracas, is a senior university technician in industrial security, specializing in safety engineering and project engineering.
Carlos started in the world of electronic security in 1981. After holding positions in the Civil Defense from 1976 to 1980.

His first contact with this world of electronic security was during a trip he made to New York with a friend to visit the alarm monitoring company ADT.

"For 15 days I immersed myself in this completely strange but fascinating new world. That's why, back, my friend and I decided to start a similar business in Venezuela," says Carlos.

Carlos and his friend carried out the market studies and in the analyses they found a small town, home to the two largest oil refineries in the world at the time. The city of Punto Fijo, Paraguana Peninsula, in the state of Falcón.

Changes were being made there in the refining patterns of light to light-heavy oil. This activity required a lot of specialized labor, which was migrating to this area, which generated a boom in the construction of houses.

"If the population increased, there would be more housing and therefore more security was needed, that is, monitoring alarms. In this city we started the business!" says Carlos.

Things did not go very well because of the difference in criteria with his partner, so Carlos decided to leave the project and return to Maracay. "I asked myself, what am I going to do? But something that emerged in November 1981 would connect me with the industry until today," he says.

A new opportunity
In 1982 Calos joined the private security company Venezolana de Prevención C.A., VEPRECA.

At the end of 1992, Venezuela received the F-16 aircraft and the headquarters of these was the city of Maracay.

600 families of maintenance technicians and ground personnel, all of American origin, came to live there and demanded alarm monitoring for their homes.

This opportunity served as a start for the company CEPROALARM C.A (Electronic Center for processing alarm systems C.A) to which Carlos has been linked until today.

An anecdote that today keeps him as an instructor
In 1993, the company CEPROALARM began to distribute a Canadian brand in Venezuela and Carlos studied the installation manuals.

The company decides that the product must be promoted and Carlos suggests that the best way is through courses that teach companies and individuals how to install and program the equipment.

Carlos suggested that in the course, each person had a team to program and thus test each function of the system.

"The cry was a unanimous 'NO' at first," says Carlos. "Then the company decided to take a risk. Of course at the cost of my salary since I would have to pay for equipment that could be damaged. But the course was a success and none of the devices used were damaged," he says.

Some time later, Carlos was certified as an alarm technician in the course of CANASA (Canadian Security Association) and in access control of SIA (Security Industry Association).

In 1998 he was hired by ALAS to perform the work of instructor and to this day, Carlos is the instructor of the Certification Courses of Alarms 1, Alarms 2 and Access Control.

Carlos currently works as a private consultant in several companies in Venezuela and Latin America.

The most significant advancement of the industry in the last 30 years.
In his 30 years of activity in the industry, Carlos considers that the most significant advance has been the integration of systems for electronic security.

"In the 80s the systems worked for the purposes that were created: alarms for alarms, access control for access, CCTV for registration and observation. It was difficult for them to interact together and there were few interconnection functions.

Nowadays all systems can interconnect and interact, in addition to generating a chain of events of their own for security. They can also give comfort to users, both in their homes and in other buildings," says Carlos.

Achievements in the industry
Carlos says his accomplishments range from the personal to learning. One of the most important for him is the long list of friends and acquaintances who during these years have shown him their appreciation.

Carlos has trained more than 3,000 professionals in Latin America, which he considers another of his main achievements, although he appreciates being able to learn more every day.

In this regard, he comments, "This is an industry that is constantly renewed and is very dynamic. Every day when I got up he told me; "I will learn more than yesterday, but less than tomorrow."

ALAS gives the warmest congratulations to Carlos Guzman for his 30 years dedicated to the industry. His companions, family and closest friends join this tribute.

"Congratulations to a great man, friend and teacher for his dedication, commitment and dedication during his 30 years of work to the Security industry. We have all been enriched by your invaluable and highly appreciated experience."
