Artificial Intelligence: changing the rules of the game

IA

In today's world, technology has become an integral component of modern life and plays a central role in almost every area of society.

by Gigi Agassini*

From communication and health, to education and economics, the influence of technology continues to grow as new solutions are developed and new ways of applying them are explored to address the challenges and opportunities of the contemporary world.

The above, and the accelerated evolution of technology, has opened up and modified different risks in the digital world; So much so that cybersecurity is a critical priority for organizations, incident response teams play an essential role in protecting sensitive assets and data.

The increasing sophistication of cyber threats has led to an increase in incident complexity as attackers employ increasingly advanced tactics to bypass traditional defenses, demanding innovative, effective, and ever-evolving solutions.

Incident response teams are under constant pressure to identify, contain, and mitigate threats in real-time. Speed is of the essence, as any delay can have serious consequences for an organization.

This is where Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an invaluable ally for security professionals, in improving the tools used by incident response teams.

Artificial Intelligence is a powerful tool in incident response, it stands out as a transformative technology since, according to IBM's "Cost of Data Breach 2023" report, all those companies that invest in AI tools have had savings of up to US $1.76 million.

Definitely, Artificial Intelligence is one of the best allies in the use of the different tools of the incident response team, such as:
1. Advanced Threat Detection
AI is capable of analyzing large volumes of data in real-time and detects patterns and anomalies that may indicate a cyberattack. Machine learning and behavioral analytics algorithms are particularly effective at identifying threats that might go unnoticed by traditional security solutions.

2. Automating Repetitive Tasks
Incident response teams often spend time on routine tasks, such as collecting logs and reviewing event logs. AI can automate these tasks, freeing up analysts to focus on more critical investigations and strategic decision-making.

3. Big Data Analytics
AI is essential for the analysis of large data sets that may contain early warning signals of threats. Artificial intelligence can correlate seemingly unrelated events to identify patterns and trends, which would be impossible to detect manually, allowing for faster and more accurate incident detection.

It helps analysts prioritize alerts and focus on the most critical threats. It should not be forgotten that the quality of the data is extremely important in order to have better analysis and information for decision-making.

4. Improved Response and Containment
AI can also be used to support incident response and containment. For example, you can automate response to known incidents and provide recommendations to analysts on how to address unknown incidents.

5. Continuous Learning and Integration
AI can learn from each incident and adapt to emerging threats. As it is fed more data, AI becomes smarter and more effective at detecting and responding to threats.

It can integrate with existing security tools such as security information management systems (SIEM) and intrusion detection solutions (IDS/IPS), to improve your responsiveness.

Challenges and Ethical Considerations
As AI becomes an integral part of cybersecurity, and despite the benefits it brings to incident response teams, ethical and privacy challenges also arise. Data confidentiality, transparency in algorithms, and ethical decision-making are important issues that need to be carefully addressed in the implementation of AI solutions in cybersecurity.
It is critical to ensure that data collection and analysis is done ethically and complies with safety regulations.

Artificial Intelligence has become an essential tool in the fight against cyber threats and is transforming the way incident response teams approach them, enabling faster detection, more efficient response, and greater security in the cyber environment. Businesses should embrace this technology as an ally in incident response, leveraging its ability to detect advanced threats, automate repetitive tasks, and improve the effectiveness of security teams, as the proper integration of artificial intelligence into incident response processes can help organizations defend more effectively.

However, it is critical to address ethical and privacy challenges to ensure that AI is used responsibly and effectively in the protection of the organization's assets and information. The combination of human expertise and Artificial Intelligence is essential to cope with such a changing world and a complex and ever-evolving cybersecurity environment.

Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, sustainability, and research and development strategies must be coordinated. This will facilitate the design, development, and deployment of systems with a focus on data security, models, and outcomes.

Although Artificial Intelligence has been highly stigmatized due to its potential risks, it is important to adopt it in line with our privacy and information security standards and policies, accompanying the process with constant training and acculturation about the benefits it brings and the risks it entails as well.

If you have not yet dared to use or implement these tools in your organization, I invite you to do so, because believe me, attackers will use them against you, without stopping to think about whether you will be ready or not.
