31/01/12. Five months after being put into operation, the Video Surveillance System of the municipality of Oaxaca de Juárez has managed to reduce the incidence of crime by more than 75 percent in the Historic Center and the Abasto Central. Given these results, it is projected to increase cameras in both areas and extend the system to the northern part of the city.
According to the Commissioner of Public Security, Rubén Oyarvide, the possibility of acquiring 21 to 25 more cameras to reinforce security in the green Antequera has been studied. However, he said, the number of devices to be acquired will depend on the amount that the National Public Security System allocates as part of the Subsidy for Municipal Public Security (Subsemun).
The minimum amount is 10 million pesos and the resources are allocated according to the results that each corporation presents. Oyarvide recalled that on February 8 the concertation meeting will take place in Mexico City, so that by that date, Oaxaca de Juárez will have assigned its Subsemun resources.
"We worked very hard last year to obtain the proof to increase our resources," said the public servant after recalling that in 2011, Oaxaca de Juárez suffered a considerable reduction because the previous administration presented minimum results in terms of security.
However, he said, in the period 2011-2013 the rules have been followed to access more resources and improve the security of the capital. In this regard, he explained that the homologation, adoption of the police model, the command and control center, and the technological requirements required by the National Public Security System have been met.
Nine video cameras are installed in the capital, seven in the Historic Center and two more in the Central de Abastos. The system was put into operation on September 5 of last year and was made based on studies of criminal incidence of the years 2009, 2010 and until March 2011.
The crime that has been most reduced is the theft of shops and the images captured by the cameras have served as evidentiary elements, whenever the authority requires them.
