A fraternal greeting from Puerto Rico to all colleagues and readers of this column! It is a pleasure to share again with you.
In today's paper we will talk about another topic of great importance to security practitioners. In this column we will talk about safety training for employees and how they can contribute to organizational safety and efficiency.
Due to the complexity and level of competence in the global business environment, every managerial function must look for ways to create or contribute to organizational efficiency in its policies and procedures.
The need for organizational efficiency lies in the fact that business companies have to have the ability to be able to adapt quickly to their changing business environment.
Corporate security as a managerial function faces this same challenge and has an obligation to help the company adapt to its business environment. Corporate security is no longer only responsible for protecting company assets, but has a responsibility to create organizational efficiency.
Erroneous beliefs of corporate security
In many business companies there are many erroneous beliefs about corporate security. One of them is that the security of a company rests only on the shoulders of the members of the corporate security unit.
Due to the business environment, the recent domestic attacks by radical elements; violence in the workplace and the increase in criminal activity, there is a need to change this belief.
With each passing day we realize the need to ensure and maintain a safe work environment for employees. But this responsibility must rest on the shoulders of all employees of a company and not only on the members of corporate security.
Security training for a company's employees is becoming a prerequisite as a measure to counter these threats, protecting assets, and as a catalyst to create greater organizational efficiency.
Safety training and the creation of organizational efficiency
As we have noted above, every managerial function must look for ways to create or contribute to organizational efficiency in its policies and procedures. Corporate security as a managerial function also has to contribute to organizational efficiency by its reach and influence throughout the company.
It is precisely this reach and influence that provides the great opportunity to promote organizational efficiency. All corporate security policies and procedures should be focused on protecting assets, preventing losses, contributing to profits, and creating organizational efficiency.
Creating organizational efficiency through safety training presents this unique opportunity. Let us examine this concept more closely.
Developing and promoting safety training for employees creates organizational efficiency on multiple fronts. First, trainings provide guidance and understanding of the company's safety programs to employees.
Through these trainings, corporate security can guide employees about their responsibilities as employees and the support needed from them. Second, the trainings point to the fact that employees are an integral and essential part of the success of corporate security programs.
It is through this signaling that employees understand their role in supporting the creation of a safe work environment. Third, through training, employees are part of a network that can report indicators of suspicious activity or violations of security policies or procedures that can become a security incident of serious consequences. And finally, involving employees in the responsibility of protecting assets, it creates teamwork and synergy between corporate security and the company's business units.
In conclusion
In the business environment of the 21st century, corporate safety as a managerial function will be limited in its contribution to business success if it does not promote organizational efficiency in its safety programs. This efficiency can be developed through the active participation of the company's employees working closely with corporate security. The tool to ensure this participation is security training periodically or according to the needs of the company. I invite you to continue to share your ideas and concerns from the world and security management.
A hug and see you next time!!
