Among the numerous stores of "Las Américas", the second largest shopping center in Morelia, in Michoacán (Mexico), a jewelry store is the one that experiences the highest number of visits. La Joyería Mallor is a well-known store in this exclusive shopping center.
The challenge
Mallor Jewelry had already suffered several robberies; however, due to the low resolution quality of the store's previous surveillance system, none of the suspects could ever be clearly identified or apprehended.
The basic system included eight security cameras, installed to deter theft and robbery. The store needed a superior quality system to help protect its customers and stocks from future criminal threats. Specifically, they wanted to achieve wider visual fields and higher resolution coverage.
Megapixel solution
In its search for a superior quality surveillance system, Mallor Jewelry contacted Sermex, a well-known security company on a national scale and specialized in video surveillance since 1988.
This company is dedicated to the development of high-tech video solutions and strives to continue offering a competitive service, according to sermex's Director of Product Engineering, Rodrigo Cervantes.
To find the best option of higher resolution megapixel IP cameras and use them in jewelry, Sermex turned to Visión Arecont. In addition to additional security advantages and the ability to identify suspects, Arecont Vision cameras offer advantages when it comes to efficiency, such as wider fields of view and higher resolution coverage.
For Sermex's engineering department, excellent recommendations and performance were the two most influential factors in the choice of Arecont Vision cameras. They also consider price to be an important factor and add that the cameras are "very cost-effective".
A Sermex integrator installed eight MegaDome® Arecont Vision cameras in the jewelry store, six of them in the area of the store where the jewelry showcases are located. The remaining two cameras were installed in "very confidential and restricted areas," according to Sermex engineers.
"After evaluating several manufacturers of this type of application, the customer chose Arecont Vision's megapixel cameras," explains Cervantes.
The system is monitored locally by the address of the jewelry store and can also be monitored remotely over the Internet.
Advantages of the megapixel system
The superior resolution of Arecont Vision's cameras allowed Mallor Jewelry to obtain superior quality and more detailed information to help them track, verify and prevent criminal acts in the store.
The result is a lower rate of violent attacks and increased security for store customers. Greater image clarity translates into better information that can be used as proof.
A significant advantage of the new system is the increased comfort level for store customers. Previously, customers were not comfortable in jewelry because of perceived security threats, which made them reluctant to shop there.
They now feel safer, more at ease and more willing to visit the store, which will contribute to increasing the return on investment (ROI) of the new system, according to the jewelry management. They have expressed their confidence that all this new security system from Arecont Vision will increase the ROI of commerce because customers and employees will feel safe. This system will not only stop thieves, but can also reduce the costs of our insurance, he stressed.
Arecont Vision cameras allow jewellers to record, analyse and interpret any evidence of theft, allowing them to achieve their primary goal of increasing security.
The system has worked "perfectly" so far, according to the jewelry management, and Arecont Vision's response to the needs of the user and the integrator has been "excellent".
The management of Mallor Jewelry has been able to verify that the superior video quality of the megapixel images can provide a variety of advantages in retail applications.
For example, the high quality video makes it easy to see how customers and store employees handle jewelry, watches, and other products, primarily as they are displayed. The image quality and digital zoom capabilities of Arecont Vision cameras far exceed analog technology and allow merchants to retrieve very useful video.
The megapixel imaging technology represents a significant improvement in system functionality compared to standard resolution cameras. Using fewer megapixel cameras to cover larger areas drastically reduces costs related to other elements of a system. This advantage is especially well appreciated in the retail sector, where costs are always an aspect to be taken into account.
The successful application of megapixel cameras to provide unparalleled image quality and resolution in a small retailer such as jewelry in Mexico illustrates the flexibility of megapixel solutions and their cost-effectiveness for a wide variety of uses.
