Development enables increased hardware acceleration with video decoding

Latin America. Milestone Systems recently launched its XProtect 2018 R1, this new version of the VMS brings, among many other updates, one that allows to increase hardware acceleration with video decoding that takes advantage of the power of several NVIDIA graphics cards in the Milestone Smart Client.

Since cameras are becoming more advanced and modern surveillance facilities require more cameras per server, it is critical to provide a way to minimize CPU load.

The XProtect 2018 R1 is the first VMS to incorporate multiple graphics cards into its video decoding, pushing the boundaries of video management and setting a record in terms of performance. Using the power of multiple NVIDIA graphics cards with the Milestone XProtect VMS modifies the processing power required to decode video in the Smart Client, moving from a CPU (central processing unit) to a GPU (graphics processing unit).

"This translates into the unrivalled ability to display more high-resolution cameras in the Smart Client as well as the use of more HD display screens or as part of the Smart Wall feature, without having to impose an additional load on the CPU," said Bjorn Eilertsen, Chief Technology Officer at Milestone Systems.

The three main benefits

Increase efficiency: View more cameras per workstation and free up resources for other tasks.
View more video streams with less CPU load
Enjoy modern cameras and displays with the highest resolution and no additional CPU load per number of streams.

"It's a way to maximize the potential of installations, as less load is imposed on the CPU, no matter how many cameras are connected. It means better use of resources: customers can purchase the latest cameras and displays with the highest resolution possible, thanks to a lower CPU load and more processing power," concludes Eilertsen. "Smaller installations can also leverage existing NVIDIA cards to impose less load on the CPU and free up resources for other necessary tasks on the same PC."

Privacy masking

Our new privacy feature allows for two types of masking: permanent and removable, both in live and recorded video. It is managed efficiently with user rights, which ensures adequate privacy protection at all times.

"Customers love it because it saves them money and is scalable. As this feature is built into the VMS, users don't have to pay for a third-party solution. It works in both live and recorded video, which guarantees privacy at all times. Because it allows you to view an unlimited number of video streams, it is a total solution for all types of installations," says Eilertsen. "It's safe: it's only possible to remove the mask if you have the right credentials. This feature allows evidence to be used in investigations and ensures the protection of privacy in everyday life."

Quick and easy installation (one-click installer)
It allows you to configure XProtect faster and easier during installation, with automatic device detection and retention time settings. Users can manage their hard drive space more efficiently than ever before.

Eilertsen states, "It's an easy way to install servers with a single installer. What was previously done separately in the Management Client can now be easily done during installation. It's simpler and easier for the user."
