International. Last year Samsung Techwin introduced its range of cameras WiseNetIII Open Platform, a novelty that had an exceptional reception in the market, because all the cameras in this range have integrated the most advanced high-performance DSP chipset, with a processing power capable of simultaneously running the most innovative applications. Now, Samsung goes a step further and will start supplying the new WiseNetIII models with pre-installed applications.
This evolution of Samsung's Open Platform philosophy has been reinforced with the appointment of Dan England as Technology Partner Manager of Samsung Techwin Europe. Dan, with 17 years of experience working in the security sector as an integrator and project manager, as well as with access control and CCTV manufacturers, has been key to bringing added value to Samsung's video surveillance system.
But nothing better than Pablo Soto Pastén, Presales and Technical Manager Spain and Portugal of Samsung Techwin Europe, explain why Samsung has opted to incorporate pre-installed software in its cameras.
Q: Pablo, first of all, what is your position as Presales and Technical Manager?
A: My main objective is to support users, whether distributors, integrators and engineers, so that they know how to define the equipment that best suits their needs, so that their facilities are a success and the end customer is satisfied to have acquired an efficient and effective system capable of responding when necessary. In short, to guarantee that we offer them the best added value as a manufacturer.
Q: Can you explain where this idea comes from?
A: In my daily work, like my counterparts in other countries, I have contact with engineers, integrators and installers who consult us on how to get the most out of our products. Hence the idea that Samsung designs products that provide cutting-edge solutions so that video surveillance goes from being a mere security system to an intelligent solution with the capacity to provide many more benefits to customers.
Since Samsung Techwin Europe introduced the WiseNetIII Open Platform range of cameras, we have been contacted by countless software development companies that want to capitalize on the business opportunities that may arise from running their solutions on WiseNetIII cameras. And Dan's role is to manage, encourage, and support all of these application developers and video management software (VMS) vendors, and collaborate with them to ensure that the customers we share can freely choose from a wide variety and combination of Samsung-approved solutions.
Q: You'll start pre-installing apps on WiseNetIII cameras. Doesn't it restrict customers' free choice of the applications they want to work with?
A: No, not at all. We've listened to our customers and it makes perfect sense in the world to offer a number of "pre-packaged" options for those customers who start working with video analytics or are simply looking to make a hassle-free purchase.
However, I must emphasize that customers will continue to have the possibility of acquiring Samsung's WiseNetIII cameras without pre-installed software and that, in addition, they will continue to have the option to install the applications of their choice, as they need. Once the WiseNetIII camera has been connected to the network, installers and operators only have to download the application of their choice using the camera's browser.
Q: So what are the advantages of buying Samsung WiseNetIII cameras with pre-installed apps?
A: We made this decision because it reinforces Samsung's reputation as a brand that our customers can trust unconditionally when looking for ways to install video surveillance solutions in a simple way and get the maximum return on investment. In this sense, the Open Platform is very interesting. It's going to be a game changer and our mission is to help customers get the most out of it.
By pre-installing software that we have fully evaluated and tested, we will be saving installers, system integrators and users the time and effort involved in having to search for applications from a list that grows at a dizzying pace. In addition, since we have worked closely with the developers of these applications, we guarantee customers a fully integrated and easy-to-configure solution.
Q: What kind of apps are you recommending to your customers?
A: The great news is that some automatic license plate recognition and analysis apps are already available as pre-installed apps on Samsung's WiseNetIII cameras. But, in addition to video analysis, WiseNetIII cameras and domes will also carry pre-installed storage applications, people counting, perimeter protection and anti-intrusion, and specific solutions for the retail sector. I have no doubt that many more applications of different types will appear on the scene in the coming months.
As already predicted when the WiseNetIII range was presented, what we can be sure of is that within a year we will look back and be surprised with the wide variety of applications that will be available.
Q: It seems that customers are going to find it a bit tricky to buy a WiseNetIII camera with the right apps pre-installed, especially if they want to make the most of the cameras' ability to run more than one app at a time.
A: It's not really going to be a problem. Thanks to smart part numbers, we'll make it a hassle-free process for the customer, so they can identify and purchase the perfect combination of camera and apps.
Q: Who are your preferred providers for these applications and what regions do they cover?
A: A full list will be published shortly on our website, which will include both European and worldwide solutions. In the meantime, I am available to advise and advise on the best options for specific projects.
