Colombia. The district administration launched the Integrated Intelligent Video Surveillance System for TransMilenio (Sivit), state-of-the-art security cameras installed in stations and portals of the mass transport system.
These cameras are capable of facial recognition of thousands of faces per second, with more than 120 points of comparison, despite some variants that the subject may present, such as beard, aging or skin color.
In this regard, Máximo Noriega Rodríguez, manager of the Surveillance and Security Fund, assured the bogotá media that "the initiative is a pioneer in public transport systems in Latin America and is the result of the union of efforts between the Surveillance and Security Fund, TransMilenio and the Mayor of Bogotá."
"The system is managed by the police and works with a database that stores thousands of faces. We tested it in front of the media and the public, and indeed, as General Guatibonza pointed out, it is one of the best security tools because it not only allows to prosecute, but also to persuade criminals, who already know that TransMilenio cannot be a stage to steal, sexually harass or commit crimes," he added.
The manager of the Security Fund also indicated that the capture of a criminal, after his identification, "occurs in less than 15 seconds, while the camera generates the alarm to the police monitor, he immediately refers it to the police officer, who proceeds to the arrest automatically."
