FireEye has presented its annual report, Advanced Threat Report – 1H 2011, in which it ensures not only that 99% of companies have serious security flaws, but that only 50 malware families are capable of generating 80% of infections successfully.
The most common attacks are those performed by fake antivirus and information-stealing malware, which acts as a conduit for more serious malware infections that seek credentials and keys to the theft of intellectual property and sensitive data.
FireEye says cybercriminals find it relatively easy to circumvent traditional defenses and compromise the vast majority of enterprise networks. The company says that the problem is due to the difference between the protection established and an increasingly sophisticated malware capable of overcoming those defenses, such as firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, antivirus or gateways.
Research suggests that 99% of businesses have been affected by network infections every week, and that 80% of businesses face more than a hundred new cases per week.
Traditional enterprise defense is not able to cope with the dynamic, multi-stage attacks now used by cybercriminals to target businesses and federal agencies, fireeye said, calling for a review of security policies and systems.
