Since COBIT was unveiled 15 years ago, companies around the world have used it to evaluate and improve their IT processes. However, until now there was no consistent and reliable evaluation model. ISACA's new COBIT Assessment Programme, which includes the new Process Assessment Model (PAM), offers this consistency and reliability so that business and IT leaders can trust the assessment process and the quality of results while maximizing the business value of their IT investments. After conducting a global survey in 2010 to determine market need, ISACA found that 89 percent of the 1,400 respondents expressed the need for a rigorous and reliable IT process capability assessment.

*"COBIT PAM provides the basis for evaluating a company's IT process with COBIT 4.1 and allows process capability assessments to support improvement," said Gary Baker, CA, CGEIT. "The assessment is evidence-based to ensure a reliable, consistent and repeatable process in IT governance and management."*

The second guide in the COBIT Assessment Programme series – COBIT The Advisor's Guide Using COBIT 4.1 – will be released in late 2011. It will offer information on how to conduct a formal assessment by a trained certified advisor. The Advisor's Guide will use COBIT PAM as the base reference document and will provide options for the scope of assessments.

The third guide in the series – COBIT Self-Assessment Guide Using COBIT 4.1 – is also under development. This guide will allow companies to perform the basic self-assessment of current IT process capacity levels with COBIT 4.1. Companies will be able to use it to conduct non-evidence-based capability assessments to serve as a precursor review to a formal assessment.

The COBIT process evaluation model will be integrated into COBIT 5, which will be available in early 2012. COBIT acts as an integrator of more detailed international standards and guidance. Based on industry standards and best practices, it is a complete model that ensures that IT is meeting the needs of a company and that it allows to meet the strategic objectives of the business.

The COBIT Process Assessment Model is available to ISACA members free of charge. Non-members can purchase it for $50.
