The City of Buenos Aires completes 15 thousand security cameras installed

Seguridad Buenos Aires

Argentina. A total of 15,000 security cameras were installed in most of the territory of the City of Buenos Aires, reaching a coverage of 75% in video surveillance within the framework of the Comprehensive Video Surveillance Plan of the Ministry of Justice and Security of Buenos Aires.

The installation of video surveillance cameras in most of the territory responds to one of the City Commitments assumed by the Head of Government, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta. The fulfillment of this Commitment to have 75% of the City video monitored was possible thanks to the incorporation of around 5,000 new cameras in the last two years. In this way, the City went from 10 thousand to 15 thousand installed units.

The City's Comprehensive Video Surveillance Plan allowed to go from 2,000 cameras installed in 2018 to 15,000 in 2022, distributed on public roads, highways and subways. These cameras are essential to prevent crime and to act quickly when it is committed. They also provide evidence for the investigations carried out by the City Police and Justice.

The video surveillance project has a system of forensic analysis of video images that allows you to search for objects, people and / or vehicles and make filters according to color, morphology of elements, sense of displacement and temporal range, among others.

All the devices are supervised from the three Urban Monitoring Centers (CMU) that the City currently has: Chacarita -the largest in Latin America-, Avenida 9 de Julio and Puerto Madero.

To comply with this Commitment, the Ministry of Justice and Security of Buenos Aires also implemented the Digital Library, a tool aimed at streamlining the work of Justice and making available images of the almost 15,000 cameras installed throughout the City and reduce the delivery times of these images from 10 days to 24 hours.

To the City's Comprehensive Video Surveillance Plan is added the Digital Security Ring: a control system composed of 740 patent readers and 120 cameras in 74 accesses of the City, which are supervised in the North/Balbín and Sur/La Noria monitoring centers. From this system it is possible to identify each of the vehicles that use the entrances and exits of Buenos Aires. The system is complemented by the Urban Mobility Management Center, located in Parque Patricios.

Commitments to safety
Since 2019, the Urban Monitoring Centers (CMU) have intervened in the resolution of about 94,000 criminal episodes, mainly cases of robbery, theft, drug dealing, gender violence and carrying weapons. The average number of daily interventions is 300 cases, which include road accidents, fires and demonstrations, in addition to the different criminal modalities.

For its part, the Digital Security Ring identifies an average of 2,900,000 vehicles per day, and allowed a 90% reduction in extortionate kidnappings. In addition, since 2017 it was key to the kidnapping of 1,080 vehicles for different crimes, the identification of 3,213 traffic offenses and the realization of 761 arrests.

In addition, to work at the service of the security of the neighbors of the City, we have already fulfilled our Commitment to incorporate 10,000 cameras in buses, subways and public roads and we assume by 2023 the Commitment to integrate 1,000 cameras from the private sector to our video surveillance system.

4,000 new police officers were also added to the streets and by 2023 4,000 new police officers will be added with double the training by 2023.

They also installed LED lighting on all the streets of the City and published the Crime Map online. This tool, together with the 'Nearby Police Stations' program, allows us to listen to citizens, identify specific problems, establish criminal patterns, make better diagnoses and evaluate the effectiveness of our responses.

Additionally, 500 new smart patrol boats will be added to complete the renewal of 80% of the fleet by 2023. These mobile phones include technology that allows the identification of apprehended people in situ. Thanks to the incorporation of recording and geolocation systems, the new vehicles facilitate the real-time tracking of security agents, as well as their relocation and the sending of reinforcements quickly, according to the need.
