Details 06 December 2016 ![](https://www.ventasdeseguridad.com/images/stories/VDS/digit1.jpg)*Mexico.* Comstor business unit of Westcon-Comstor and one of the leading wholesalers of Cisco technology, unveils 7 tips to create a Digital Security Council within your company.

Currently, business security is a factor of extreme importance, either to protect the physical or virtual space it is essential that there are trained collaborators for both functions. In our case, we will talk about the virtual security of the company, which today is essential for the organization, regardless of the size of the company.

But at what point does a company need to have a Digital Security Council in its departments? And how can this help you on a day-to-day basis?

First, it is necessary to know that the Internet is an environment prone to attacks at any time and on any occasion. All companies need to protect their data, so the creation of a Digital Security Council would be a good way out to avoid cyber attacks. The council is nothing more than a sector composed of people specialized in analyzing possible attacks that the company may suffer and thus work with prevention.

In the same way that each company separates its departments, security needs a specific space as well. And this is when the importance of creating a council arises, because the cyber threat is a reality in the market and puts at risk what for institutions is the most valuable: Information.

In recent years, it has become clear that no company is 100% secure on the Internet. That finding raised many questions about information security practices in companies, questions that only one council could answer. Thinking about that change in behavior and the importance of advice, below, we list 7 tips for creating this type of team:

**1. Invest in the creation of the Digital Security Council**
Each employee must be a specialist, or at least, understand well what he does within the company. However, in the case of virtual security, understanding well is not enough. It has to be necessarily a specialist, so the beginning of everything is the creation of the board with extremely trained collaborators focused on that function.

**2. Planning**
It doesn't create an overnight tip, even more about virtual security. It is necessary to have a good planning and make a document in which all this information is recorded, among them, the mission of the council, its values and objectives. In addition to that, it is necessary to detail the functions of each position that will make up the board and how the operation of that new team of the company will be.

**3. Focus**
With all the planning ready you should focus to start the work, since the company team will be seeing exclusively the prevention of virtual attacks. Its main function will be to work with the prevention of the systems used by the company. For that, you must constantly train and improve daily, because working with virtual security prevention means practically working in the future, but living in the present.

**4. Geographical distance**
In a digital society, without walls, one of the great challenges is to shield the company against information escape. The Internet helps a lot in that type of work, but it is essential that the members of the council reside in the place of the creation of the council, since each region has its virtual particularity. If the company has branches in other cities, states or in another country, it is necessary that all the members are in tune so that the board works with a single objective: to guarantee the security of the company's information.

**5. Experience**
It is essential that board members have experience in the area so that they can understand digital security issues. In addition, experience will make matters more easily dealt with and situations of vulnerability are detected more quickly.

**6. Cloud storage**

That type of storage is present in virtually every company. However, it may represent vulnerability. It is the board's responsibility to analyze the feasibility of using that type of storage and how to create protection measures for corporate data.

**7. Meetings**

It is very important that members make a commitment to meet, at least once a week. In this meeting, all matters related to the virtual security of the company must be discussed and what will be the protection measures that can be adopted if any type of attack happens. It is necessary to reserve the day and time in which that meeting will happen and concentrate all the members of the council, if you can not meet everyone in person, we recommend that you use videoconferencing technologies or other resources.

The Digital Security Council is extremely important within the company, but it is useless if the other collaborators do not do their part. Some tips would be, for example, to always pay attention to websites that are frequently accessed, to avoid accessing pages of unknown origin or with suspicious content. In addition, it is important to take care of emails and messages on social networks and other sites, since many times links are sent to false pages or containing spyware and malware.
