A subway operator in Shenzhen, China, is testing facial recognition software to pay for admission. At Futian Station, instead of presenting a ticket or scanning a QR barcode on their smartphones, passengers can scan their faces on a tablet-sized screen mounted on the front door and have the fare automatically deducted from their linked accounts, according to a report. The report notes that the facial recognition ticketing service is currently in test mode, but could help improve efficiency in handling up to 5 million trips per day on the city's metro network.
