Details 10 July 2012 ![alt](https://www.ventasdeseguridad.com/images/stories/VDS/Noticias/central-de-monitoreo-vigilara-carceles-peruanas.jpg)***Peru.*** In the coming days, a monitoring center will operate at the headquarters of the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) to supervise the activities of various prisons in the country, and that will initially interconnect five prisons in Lima, in order to prevent inmates from incurring in actions outside the law.

José Luis Pérez Guadalupe, president of the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE), confirmed that five prisons in the capital already have security cameras for that purpose, which are integrated into the monitoring room that will operate at the headquarters of the entity in Lima.

He also stressed that the measure is part of a package of security regulations implemented by his administration to prevent the most dangerous inmates from continuing to exercise their criminal activity from prison, for example, through cell phones that contact them with the outside.

On May 22, the law was enacted that punishes with custodial sentences the entry and possession of communication equipment, such as cell phones, cameras and video cameras, and also firearms or other weapons within the prisons.

However, INPE decided to give inmates a period of 60 days to voluntarily surrender all prohibited items in their possession, in order to avoid further penalties. Monitoring centers seek to exert more control over these prisons.
