Biometrics for protection of sports complexes: success story

Biometrics for protection

Brazil. A flexible solution based on facial recognition has proven effective in protecting the facilities of the most modern soccer stadium in Brazil.

With a capacity of more than 40,000 people, the stadium also has a training and training center for athletes, located 15 kilometers away.

Specifically, it was necessary to control entrances and automate access, as well as prevent sanctioned fans from entering sports venues.

In addition, the Marketing Department of the Brazilian sports club needed to obtain information about fans and members, with the aim of applying commercial intelligence and increasing profitability.

Consequently, video surveillance systems were needed to obtain data related to the locations and frequencies of traffic in different areas of the facilities.

The project was designed taking into account the need for the selected system to be flexible and adaptable so that it could integrate previously installed video surveillance equipment and devices from various manufacturers.

After considering four of the main video surveillance system manufacturing companies worldwide, the facial recognition and license plate reading solution from the manufacturer SCATI was finally chosen.

“SCATI's innovative facial recognition systems installed for one of the most important football clubs in Brazil place its technology once again at the forefront and allow the club to offer a completely safe sporting experience,” said Fabio Faria, KAM from SCATI in Brazil.

Technical solution
The new video surveillance system is managed centrally using SCATI video management platforms.

These platforms incorporate Business Intelligence tools that facilitate decision-making and, in addition, allow you to manage the CCTV system from anywhere and at any time, whether from a fixed or mobile device.

In addition to the existing cameras, new facial recognition and vehicle license plate reading cameras were added, for a total of 300 cameras from different manufacturers.

More than 30 facial recognition cameras (SDLI-3601VR-EMXA8) from SCATI were located in the 12 access points of the stadium and the training center, but also in corridors, the stadium store and other key points.

The SDLI-3601VR-EMXA8 camera offers high resolution images under any lighting condition, thanks to the built-in infrared that illuminates up to 60 meters. Despite the large influx of people, these cameras are capable of identifying attendees at a rate of 60 faces per second. Thanks to this, the club can identify crowds and also conflictive fans to prevent their access.

On the other hand, in order to control vehicle access, LPR (Licence Plate Recognition) reading cameras were installed. Specifically, the SDLC-3511VR-XYM2-LPR model allows you to monitor all vehicle entrances and exits, as well as automate them.

The information and images returned by the systems are stored locally through SCATI's Kraken series recording servers, designed for projects that require efficient management of hundreds of cameras (up to 256 each).

In addition, they have redundancy of their main hardware elements (storage, power supplies or network cards), to maximize uninterrupted operation in the event of possible eventualities.
