Mexico. Earlier this month, the official presentation of the "Eagle Unit" was made, belonging to the Ministry of Citizen Security, a set of drones whose purpose is to deliver air intelligence that serves to strengthen the security of the Mexican capital.
The work of the Eagle Unit will consist of "conducting surveillance and reconnaissance overflights, with the aim of nurturing lines of investigation and inhibiting the commission of crimes in areas of higher criminal incidence."
According to the official statement that presents this novelty, Secretary Omar García Harfuch said that "thanks to the vision and support of the Head of Government, in three years we managed to move from a traditional public security model to a citizen security model by expanding the investigative powers of our police, improving their capabilities. Equipment and social proximity. This has made it possible to substantially improve the fight against crime and the prevention of violence."
Additionally, part of the aforementioned transformation is that institutional reengineering of the Undersecretariat of Police Intelligence and Investigation was carried out. Hence, now the Cyber Police carry out investigative tasks, beyond cyberspace, such as verifying buildings where the crimes that are within its competence are carried out.
For her part, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the Head of Government, indicated that the presentation of this unit is related to the third axis of the security strategy in the city, which is intelligence and investigation.
"This area that you are seeing and these unmanned aircraft, what they show is how intelligence has advanced in the Mexico City Police, from being a preventive police, today it is a police that does intelligence and investigation. And we have more and more prepared elements that perform actions and a better cyber work to carry out the arrest of criminals and, at the same time, the possibility of patrolling with these new technologies."
However, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, said at the event that: "the Mexico City Police is not only a preventive police but also an investigative police, so congratulations to the Head of Government for all the effort she has put into security in conjunction with the Secretary of Citizen Security. Here the work of Omar García Harfuch is very important, who makes the capital a safer place and to whom we recognize the search for technological tools to make this possible".
