The new challenges of access control

Control de AccesoA group of professionals related to the access control industry shared their vision of this market today.

by Security Sales

The access control industry is one of the most important market niches within the security industry. It has very strong manufacturers, with great constant innovations and with a high participation in Latin America.

The covid caused this market to increase in its commercialization and that new solutions such as contactless technologies appeared strongly to contribute to biosecurity recommendations.

With the participation of some experts in the field, in this article we will analyze the access control market in Latin America, as well as the main technologies, new developments and future forecasts.

Market appreciations in the region
Humberto De La Vega, from the consulting firm Tuxen & Associates, commented in this regard that "I observe that the access market in particular in terms of controllers, platforms and software continues to be led by large groups, in the part of readers or input and output devices, those based on RFID are those with the largest installed base, although biometrics have had an important escalation, especially those of facial recognition from the contactless movement, this caused by the pandemic where the technology of virtual credentials appears but there is still a while to have a greater acceptance. In the aspect of related niches, vehicle control continues to be one of the most recurrent, now increased by the growth of cargo logistics centers and by the strict reason of the increase in insecurity in urban areas. The application of residential access has increased in some cases up to 100% compared to 2019 according to our measurement."

For his part, Alejandro Espinosa of HID Global, commented on the matter that "The most mature markets in Latin America are Mexico, in second place Brazil and then countries such as Colombia and Argentina, which have been favored for several reasons. These mature markets foster the strength of integrators which in turn consolidates the strength of brands to withstand this type of situation such as the pandemic, since they have savings and can make long-term plans. We have seen the disappearance of small businesses that could not withstand the impact of the global pandemic for example."

Marcelo Victorino, Senior Director, Sales & Bus Dev, of RealNetworks, a specialist in facial recognition, gave us his specific insight into the Brazilian market: "According to ABESE, the Brazilian Association of Electronic Security Systems Companies, in Brazil alone, the market had revenues of around 1.4 billion dollars and has been growing 12% a year. Although there are strong companies (26,000 companies), this is a very fragmented market and I think we could consider these numbers and behaviors throughout Latin America, both in terms of growth and diversification of supplier companies."

For his part, Leonardo Ribeiro, Technical Sales Manager of Anviz, said that "The access control market in Latin America is growing rapidly. We can see that both Chinese and Korean, European and American brands have given great importance to the Latin American market and have established branches. The access control market in Latin America also developed from a simple system to a specialized solution platform, a variety of identification technologies, and diversified applications."

Influence of the pandemic
This is one of the most important issues for which we wanted to consult our guests, because in the market there is the perception that covid influenced this market or impacted its solutions directly. Let's see what the experts tell us.

- Publicidad -

Humberto De La Vega mentioned that "The clearest phenomenon is the participation of electronic access control elements in the reception, registration and perimeter areas, which have been modified or adapted to cover the operational, health and security requirements based on specific protocols developed by the authorities of each country or by the corporate governance of regional or global companies. Here we see that biometric facial recognition equipment that mostly incorporated thermal monitoring elements were the most requested, as well as thermal recording cameras. Visitor registration systems were updated for the purposes of biosanitary access protocols and the reading of vehicle patents increased the installed base."

Alejandro Espinosa said in this regard: "Without a doubt, the global pandemic accelerated the digital transformation of the world and reoriented the issue of identifications with contact in several terms. First, for a long period of time people stopped going to work, which slowed down the cycle of physical identity production; In addition, the cards are still an element that can be transferable. This is how organizations began to look for contactless alternatives for the reopening of their workplaces, with technology that reduces points of contact between people and objects, and that guarantee the standards of safety, efficiency and comfort for users. "

On the previous aspect, Leonardo Ribeiro agrees, who said that "during the pandemic, more flexible ways of working have also emerged, such as at home and in a remote office. As a consequence, there was an impact on both access control solutions and time and attendance. It was necessary to develop ways to ensure more flexible authority management, faster assignment of remote and multi-level access control permissions, and also data synchronization and collection. At the same time, the pandemic has also accelerated the popularization of contactless identification (facial, iris, etc.) and mobile apps in the access control industry."

The use of masks was a new challenge for facial recognition systems, this is an aspect highlighted by Marcelo Victorino: "The pandemic has accelerated the use of intelligence to control the use of masks, alert if the person does not wear a mask and the use of facial recognition to allow safe access without contact, which increases hygiene. I understand that this is a movement that will continue even after the pandemic, as companies are realizing that it is possible to have control faster than card and digital or password controls and with an accuracy greater than 99%."

Development of new features and algorithms
This is one of the industries that presents the greatest evolution. Our guests give us their impressions about the latest developments. For example, Marcelo Victorino, from RealNetworks, highlighted on the subject of facial recognition that "he had to overcome the challenge of maintaining accuracy and speed even with the mask on. Some technologies failed, but highly inverted AI video analytics could maintain 99% accuracy even if the subject wears a mask. Taking advantage of this context, important features were developed, such as alerts if the person is not wearing a mask, even if the person tries to circumvent the system by covering the face with their hands. Occupancy control panels were also developed to limit the number of people in enclosed places, signage for the entry of elderly people, for greater attention to groups most at risk of covid-19 and contactless authentication functions to avoid contamination when touching doorknobs, keyboards or screens."

Alejandro Espinosa, from HID Global, says that "All manufacturers, especially those who develop applications for smartphones, had to become more efficient in several aspects, including the issue of algorithms. Depending on the size of the company and its capital, some companies were able to react faster than others, even some have failed to react. New needs were born that were not considered before, such as contactless authentication or facial recognition with a mask. In this way we have worked so that at least half of the offer has features that fit these new needs".

For his part, Humberto De La Vega, said in this regard: "Without a doubt in terms of image analytics facial recognition scrutinizing the wearing or not of a mask is the most popular, followed by those related to temperature monitoring in groups of people in free transit. The simplest related to the counting of influx for purposes of capacity control also multiplied in video surveillance systems in even in systems of protection of articles in the area of the retail market . "

On future algorithms, Humberto highlights that "the sky will be the limit, every time the issue of analytics, big data and artificial intelligence becomes more frequent in the development tables of companies in the sector and the fact of having faster hardware will make algorithms more complex and faster. In my opinion, a new generation of analytics oriented to video surveillance and access with the purpose of identifying conditions or behaviors in arbitrary groups such as schoolyards, shopping centers, airports, and others of great human trafficking will be taking the greatest role. "

The contact biometrics market
Many of us wonder what will happen to this market, because during the pandemic it was feared that the virus would spread through contact with surfaces, and that encouraged the massification of non-contact technologies that were previously highlighted. Now there is talk that it is very difficult for covid to spread through these mechanisms and we are left with the doubt about what will happen to this market.

Humberto says that "In my opinion this technology will continue to be the most relevant in the market related to crime investigation and immigration control. In this last aspect the installed base is very large and I do not see that they can be updated to other technologies such as serious facial recognition without having a parameterization (read standard) that makes possible the adoption, interoperation and precision of the equipment in question. "

Alejandro Espinosa says that the market has been transformed, even the issue of the digital footprint that was so strong has had to be reconsidered. "Most devices are not ready to deal with this situation. However, some manufacturers have been able to react, for example, we have developed fingerprint devices with multispectral technology, which allows the reading of fingerprints even when using latex thimbles, or with a certain percentage of alcohol in the hands. "

Leonardo Ribeiro assures that as the pandemic eases and ends, the contact biometrics market will return to a level close to normal. Primarily from a cost perspective, contact biometric products remain a cost-effective option for small and medium-sized businesses.

IoT in access control
Marcelo Victorino says Industry 4.0 is driving greater intelligence at the edge in a variety of different devices, with technology becoming lighter, faster and more accurate. The Internet, including 5.0, will also provide processing centralization and increased capillarity for the use of intelligence, in addition to more integrations. All of this results in greater flexibility of implementation in different scenarios. Big data and artificial intelligence will bring more intelligence and capacity to millions of processed data, allowing for more complex security rules and more information available to support the business.

Humberto De La Vega believes in this regard that access control platforms in the cloud and smart devices in lock, padlock, door closing, hinges, etc., are a reality and all that needs to be normalized is for prices to begin to have a proliferation of them.
For his part, Alejandro Ibarra says that "first of all you have to understand that smartphones themselves are part of IoT environments, so the natural trend is the digitization of identifications. Naturally there are many devices on the market that are part of IoT environments, but not all of them can be used as identification and encourage contactless access. I sense that everything is going to be revolving around mobility than the IoT world for access control."

Future Prospects of the Access Control Market
Our guests gave us their forecasts on what would be the biggest future challenges that the access control sector may experience:

Humberto De La Vega - Tuxen & Associates: That manufacturers and developers integrate these systems as much as possible into the operational processes of companies as part of the whole and not as an independent system. For example, in the area of supply chain and security regulation, the use of technology from the perimeter is essential and this is access. So is the convergence with virtual credentialing systems and video surveillance systems.

Marcelo Victorino – RealNetworks: Companies that offer more processing with less need for structure, smarter software that can balance environmental challenges, such as lighting, and that adapts to people rather than waiting for people to adapt, will be the solutions that will face the challenges of accuracy, speed, and price competition.

Alejandro Espinosa – HID Global: I think one of them will be to implement Ultra Wide Band technology in access control systems, this technology will allow to potentiate the use of smartphones, since it will no longer be necessary to take out the cell phone for an opening intention and we will be able to have access simply by a field where the reader is. Another challenge may be to merge mobility technologies with facial recognition technologies, these two technologies working together will become extremely secure and efficient on the subject of access control.

Leonardo Ribeiro – Anviz: The biggest challenge facing the access control industry in the future is in relation to the security, processing, collection and management of personal data between devices and cloud systems. There is still no global standard for that, the current computerization is enacted differently according to the region, which restricts a more extensive application. There are still many restrictions on the development of intelligent access control and cloud access control systems.
