We present a solution designed for critical infrastructures of maximum security.
by Eng. Daniel Vázquez Cayetano
Critical infrastructures are those infrastructures that provide essential services – that is, services necessary to keep basic social activities, health, safety, social and economic well-being of the population in operation – so their operation is essential and their disruption would cause catastrophic results.
It is for this reason that these infrastructures demand the integration of technological solutions that mitigate any type of threats or minimize their vulnerabilities (terrorism, organized crime, espionage, natural causes), guaranteeing security and proper management of their processes. Such is the case of the Social Rehabilitation Centers.
Although today there is a wide variety of solutions, both operational and technological, aimed at maximizing security, monitoring, control and administration in such infrastructures, there is a system that is key to achieving your security objectives: the identity management system.
An ideal identity management system for critical infrastructures
An identity management system allows to secure and safeguard the high sensitivity points of any infrastructure, including network and telecommunications rooms, monitoring and control rooms, emergency plants, and all spaces that may be vulnerable inside such facilities.
That is why in SISSA Digital, one of the main divisions of SISSA Monitoring Integral, we created and developed IXMAKI, a platform initially designed for identity management and pedestrian access control in Social Readaptation Centers of the Mexican Republic, critical infrastructures that by their nature demand high levels of security.
IXMAKI is currently operating successfully in various Social Readaptation Centers of the Mexican Republic, covering all the functionality and operation requirements corresponding to such critical high security infrastructures, specifically to control and restrict pedestrian access to its facilities, making use of its original infrastructure and, in other cases, having renewed its devices.
Since, at first, our customers presented the need to update the systems they had installed in their equipment (close to leaving the market), IXMAKI was developed with the aim of extending the productive life of the devices, being able to adapt to any equipment available on the market.
Biometric identity management
This platform is fully compatible with those devices that do not require contact for the identification of people, such as identification by contactless fingerprint, face (2D and 3D) and iris, the latter in the process of integration. In addition, it is capable of interacting with biometric devices that are certified by international security agencies, and with robust, secure and state-of-the-art access control systems.
A modular solution
One of the learnings we have had when implementing this solution with different clients is that the information generated by our software can be exploited in multiple ways. That is why we have developed different modules or applications that allow a better use of the information generated.
Mobile Module Roll Call
IXMAKI has the mobile module List Pass, used to manage the identity through a multibiometric device (individual fingerprint, iris, 2D face) with Android operating system, which, in addition to being easy to use and transport, is very useful to make the identification in places where it is not possible to have fixed devices or direct communication with the information repository, since with this module it is possible to make the identification tato with remote connection to the central server, as locally in the device, and then empty the information in the server.
NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology)
In the world there are multiple systems of multiple companies, which often makes it difficult to share directly the information they house given the incompatibility of their formats.
That is why IXMAKI also has the NIST module, through which it is possible to generate files with an international standard format, which enables interoperability between both national and international security organizations, ideal for critical high security infrastructures.
Non-biometric identity management
However, when we talk about identity management we do not refer exclusively to the management of biometric data, but also to the management of general information of people (name, sex, age), personal documents, identification cards and particular signs of the human body (tattoos, scars, unique characteristics); that is, the elements that give identity to a person.
For this reason, IXMAKI has incorporated different modules that go beyond the use of biometrics and seek to optimize various processes based on the information collected:
• Digitization of personal and work documents (to integrate them into your electronic or digital record).
• Authentication of personal identification documents (ine, passport, visa), which has given good results even with international identifications of difficult verification that other systems have not been able to verify.
• TimeKeeping, which administers and manages the pre-payroll of the personnel of any company, organization or work team, based on the records of the access control system (hours and days worked, for example) in conjunction with the attendance policies of the place.
Design and conditioning according to particular needs
One of the most important advantages of our platform is that, being an own development of SISSA Digital, we have the control of the source code, which allows us to design and customize the system according to the specific requirements of those who hire our services, since it is not a closed solution (or box, as they are also known to those that are compatible only with the products of their manufacturer). In addition, this platform includes personalized technical support service.
IXMAKI in high security infrastructures
Although IXMAKI was born as a solution aimed at covering the management and security needs of Social Readaptation Centers, today this identity management system is adaptable to any environment and has been successfully implemented in educational, hospital, corporate and sports centers, so it could also be implemented in any critical infrastructure.
At SISSA Digital we always seek to meet and even exceed the requirements and expectations of our customers, thus establishing solid business partner relationships based on a "win-win" philosophy.
