Thanks to NVT Phybridge's solutions, a major Peruvian penitentiary was able to put its new High Definition IP security cameras into operation.

Through a bidding process, the Penitentiary Institute of Peru (INPE) began the process of modernizing the video surveillance system in the ANCON I Establishment (located in the city of Lima). This process included the acquisition and installation of a system of IP and high-definition security cameras, with which they intended to replace the analog video platform that the prison had and which was made up of 43 cameras and coaxial wiring. This would be the first implementation of high-resolution IP cameras in penitentiary institutions in Peru.
INPE ANCON I -by budget item- specified within the technical specifications of its tender that the integrator was the power to work with the existing cabling (coaxial) or replace all the wiring using UTP cable and fiber optics.
According to Eng. Oscar Lara – Project Manager of Electronic International Security S.A. (ELINSE), the integrating firm to which the contract was awarded – the decision to implement an IP video surveillance platform was to improve the recognition and identification of people and supervise the operational actions within the prison. "This platform corresponds only to high-resolution IP technology and with projection to progressively increase to 200 cameras," he added.
With this modernization project it was also intended to solve a series of inconveniences that occurred in the prison, for example: the distances of the 43 cameras to the only communications point is between 200 to 650 meters, there was only a single video surveillance control center and it was not feasible to enable communications rooms in the possible sectors contemplated within the trajectory of the cameras to the control center.
To solve these problems, two options were considered: look for a recognized brand that would implement the IP cameras using the existing coaxial cabling, or use fiber optics, with the respective additional expenses that this represented, since it was necessary to acquire additional equipment to be able to connect the cameras.
Faced with the imminent migration, those in charge of the project faced two main risks. The first was the behavior of the state of the existing coaxial wiring and with twelve years of use, which were to serve analog cameras. The other risk was to guarantee the video signal and energy in cameras located 650 meters away.
This is how the ELINSE team met with the representatives of NVT Phybridge, who appealed to all their technical support to ensure that this installation was possible with the available coaxial cable. For this it was only necessary to acquire the EC LINK adapters and CLEER manageable switches; the former will guarantee Ethernet links with PoE power at distances of up to 650 metres to the control centre on which the CLEER switches were installed. Two 24-port units were installed in the control centre for the second switch.
The company in charge of the project carried out preliminary and load tests of the 43 cameras, using the coaxial cable transmitting video signal and energy through the same cable, ensuring the high resolution of the images without any loss in the quality of the same. In addition, it was found that with these NVT Phybridge solutions comparative cost savings and reduction in installation, service and utilization amounts were obtained.
As far as the power of the cameras is concerned, thanks to these switches it was possible to send the signal by the same coaxial cable, eliminating external sources. "In this project, tests were carried out that allowed us to see that using the same coaxial cable it was possible to transmit video in HD, saving on installation, services and utilization," explained Oscar Lara.
Since this was a critically important implementation and impacted the operational continuity of the prison, they could not have the existing analog cameras out of service during installation. That is why the added value of NVT Phybridge was to offer a minimum time of disconnection and reconnection, being processes that were carried out gradually and equipment by equipment, without the need to replace the wiring, only NVT equipment was added.
Currently this system is interconnected by remote network with the operational headquarters of Lima, from where the 43 cameras are displayed.
"The user is so satisfied with the implementation used, so he will surely make future installations in other prisons in Peru," said Oscar Lara, who also added that because it was the first time that this type of solutions was used, they learned the "know how" of how to do it using the existing coaxial wiring. "One thing is theory and another is to see it, test it and show that after-sales service costs are minimal," he concluded.
