Security and integration, plus in access control

altIn the access control segment, the market increasingly demands systems that provide an integral solution to the different problems and needs that are presented to the user. Simply put, a tailor-made solution.

by Santiago Jaramillo H.

As stated by the engineer Jesús Montero, representative of distribuidora Feracmon S.A. de C.V., every day is more important in our markets, the continuous insecurity that we suffer to a greater or lesser extent, which forces us all, large and small businesses, to make investments in electronic security and, in particular, in access controls, all in order to control employees, users, etc., or in order to prevent an illegal act.

So far in 2013, Montero points out, they have noticed a greater increase in security and access control projects for the securing of goods, avoiding theft, in short, more as a prevention of a crime than control.

Meanwhile, our other guest in this edition, Ana Sánchez, who belongs to the Marketing Team of the company key Business Process Solutions, S.A. de C.V., affirms that the most important and fastest growing vertical markets in Latin America are: Government, Health, Hospitality, Education, Commercial and Industrial.

"For all these markets, it is extremely critical to have a comprehensive access control solution that allows them to maintain a high level of security. S2 Security offers a fourth-generation solution that since its inception offered innovations that translate into a low Total Cost of Ownership, easy maintenance and integration flexibility. The projection is that the market by 2013 will reach record goals for our products. Our products have been penetrating the Latin American market in the last two years successfully, which has ultimately exceeded expectations," says Sánchez.

Moving on to the issue of what is required to have an integrated Access Control system, especially with regard to educational centers, Jesús Montero states that the most appropriate question for these cases is what you want to control, in case you want to control the access of people the ideal is to install equipment that validates the identity in the access, either with some biometric methodology, fingerprint, facial recognition, or iris, or with the use of an identification tag of the person who took it with him. "These systems together with an installation of video cameras allow a good solution for personal access control," ponders the representative of Distribuidora Feracmon S.A. de C.V.

In addition, our guest adds that if, on the contrary, what they want to control is vehicular access to the facilities, the use of RFID technology is UHF or 2. 45 ghz becomes more convenient. And if in the third place they need to control the inventory of assets of the institution so that they are not stolen, the ideal thing is to use RFID technology.

"All these systems separately offer solutions to a certain problem, but all together working on the same platform allows the control of all the points mentioned above with minimal interaction by the user," says Montero.

Reinforcing the above, the representative of the company key Business Process Solutions, S.A. de C.V., adds that schools and universities require a comprehensive security system that allows easy monitoring of educational complexes. "The most advisable thing for this type of project is to offer open security systems that allow you to easily manage access control, video and security alarm system in an integrated management platform. Our company's systems are also an open platform of software that seamlessly integrates third-party systems with S2 Security's integrated security system. Our solution fits the comprehensive security requirements that are critical for study centers."

On the other hand, Ana Sánchez ponders the importance of having integrated security subsystems and the benefits that this entails. "The benefit of integrated security platforms is to be able to manage all the segments that make up an integrated security system from a single monitoring and management platform allowing users greater effectiveness in implementing the rules and procedures that safeguard the environment where the user operates."

It also adds that on an integrated platform the access control system can interact in a synchronized manner with CCTV and alarm systems extending the scope of a traditional access control system that is not integrated.

Meanwhile, Jesús Montero warns that there are few solutions that offer the solution for all access and security problems, "having different systems for the control of each problem is the most common thing in our markets, and of course the fact of being able to have them integrated will always be better than having them working independently", Holds.

It also indicates that depending on the degree of integration of these systems, the best result obtained will be, and the user should always seek to have the maximum of critical information in the shortest possible time and with the least action on the part of the user. "It is the system that must do everything, not the user, this should only be a receiver of information, and more if the critical points of each client can be defined. In short, what we must look for is that the user is a practically passive actor and it is the system that does everything, "says Montero.

How to obtain optimal results?
As for what recommendations I would make so that users and / or integrators of this type of systems obtain optimal results when implementing these products in their security projects, our guest of the Distribuidora Feracmon S.A. de C.V., comments that although it seems a lie the most important thing before even looking for a solution is to know what problem I have exactly, "Only by knowing very well what hurts us can we solve it," says Montero.

Who also warns that "once the problem is recognized, we must look for a supplier or manufacturer of solutions that solves that specific one, that has experience, that does not have to be explained, and that offers the integral solution. And speaking of security and access control systems, integration with other systems that the company has, which can exchange information so that the solution is integrated for the end user, must also be a requirement."

Complementing the above, our guest of the Marketing Team of the company key Business Process Solutions, S.A. de C.V., points out that the most important thing to be successful in the implementation of these integrated systems is that only authorized and certified personnel are the ones who implement these platforms. It does not matter how complete, advanced and efficient a security system is if when implemented it is not configured in the correct way, optimal results will not be obtained.

"A critical part of the implementation of these systems is a prior planning of the project in conjunction with the end user to determine the scope of the project and to be able to establish consequential expectations based on a detailed survey of the physical place where the security system will be implemented."

On the issue of the rules that regulate the installation of Access Control systems and in particular in the state that the nations of Latin America are with respect to other European countries or the United States itself, Montero maintains that we are definitely behind in general levels, but we must also bear in mind that the problem for access control and security is not the same in one country as in another.  "There are countries whose main problem is terrorism that others do not suffer, and so we can see particularities by continents, or very different countries in each one. Moreover, in this issue you can become very localistic in terms of the problem and you have to be able to offer specific solutions for each of them, "he ponders.

Going on to inquire about what are the main risks or problems that must currently be faced in Latin America in terms of access control and what is the best way to counteract them, Jesús Montero commented that three points must be taken into account.

* The first is to identify the problem well, in order to find a specific solution for it. Unfortunately there are many nuances and tend to encompass when offering solutions that can generate disappointments when installing them.

* The second is to search the market and evaluate different alternatives that offer solutions to my problem and analyze them in detail to avoid subsequent surprises.

* And the third is not to let ourselves be carried away in the decision by the price, there is too much tendency to try the most economical and it is not always the most appropriate or correct for the problem that is being solved.

• On the subject of innovation and what new proposals or technological developments will be introduced to the access control segment soon, Ana Sánchez said that one of its products, S2 Security, has been introducing novelties in the access control segment since the introduction of its first products in the market more than seven years ago.

"Outdated access control products are implemented on client/server type platforms, with heavy clients that require per-terminal licensing and are unfriendly to use; these outdated products are second generation products. The S2 Security product line from its inception introduced the third-generation concept into the access control market, introducing platforms in the form of high-performance, easy-to-grow, simplified maintenance, and client-based web browser devices without requiring restricted licenses. This is why we will continue to be an innovative company that offers not only access control on RED's device platform, but also includes NVR video solutions and security management integration under a single management platform in a single client controlled by a web browser, "he concludes.

For his part, Jesús Montero points out that every time we will see in the market more and better specific solutions for the most complex problems and no longer generic solutions that do not solve the entire solution of the client. Likewise, the use of RFID technology for asset control is increasing, and biometrics for access, which will allow greater control and fewer errors. And along with all this, integral solutions will be offered that contemplate all the security and access components that a client requires, from traditional pedestrian access, to vehicular access, along with the control of assets within the facilities, activation of alarms, monitoring of fire systems, etc.

In short, as our guest from Distribuidora Feracmon S.A. de C.V. states emphatically, "The market demands more and more solutions that integrate all the problems so that the user is easier to manage it".
